The reason why Torres and Villa are doing well for Spain at the moment is because they play with good attacking full backs and decent wide support.

I'd have said Spain are quite the opposite of that. Most of whats effective about their industry is developed centrally.

I hear with excitement this news about Silva (Nanny made my morning happy) because it would improve the team absolutely. We have serious possibilities of Silva having a soft spot for Rafa, not only because the reputation Rafa has in Valencia, but because I think it was Rafa who pointed with his finger in the depths of Segunda Division and said "I want that winger from Eibar" (Silva).

I remember back then when several fans were saying why the fúck RS wasn't getting Silva from Eibar (a RS feeder club) and it was Rafa IIRC (or maybe Pako? I must check) who said I want him. I think that he is what we need.

maybe many people will disagree with me, but i truly believe that david villa would be a great purchase to buy for our same system and last season... i think villa's interchanging between wide left and wide right and sentrally upfront, it has been a joy to see. i believe we could have torres up front, with david villa right attacking mid and david silva left attacking mid with gerrard dropping back only a tad.
say we do get barry, or not.

For this reason, and against top-class defending I think they'll struggle. I actually think the Italians will put Spain out and neither Villa nor Torres will impress. Least nobody can accuse me of sitting on the fence. I'll even go futher and guess that the Russians will cause Holland as many problems as they can cope with.

Half of the prediction came true which is nice. Arshavin was once again absolutely top-drawer as well. Given his age it makes you wonder where he's been hiding all these years.

Well having crowed about the first half of the prediction coming true, it seems only fair to point out the second part came unstuck, along with a heftyish (for me anyway) interest at Betfair (ouch!). Thank God for the lack of b@lls these days which makes me hedge at the first sign of trouble. It won't be much but I'll end up winning a sheckle or two now choose whoever wins it, with Russia being my best result and Turkey my worst.

Despite getting the predicted winners wrong, I didn't actually see too much from Villa and Torres to make me think they are an ideal partnership. Our man in particular seems to come off second best out of the arrangement, and I can't help thinking that although his ideal partner will be on the pitch in the Euro 2008 semi final, he will be playing for the other team.

I did make a point this time as well of having a good look at David Silva. Now I know that everyone rates him and all that, and that this was hardly a game in which any attackers shone (why the feck did I waste money on Italy with that fecking clown Luca Toni up top) but I wasn't totally convinced I must say. The first thing which strikes you about him is the fact that he's about five foot three and probably seven stone dripping wet. He wouldn't be the first bloke of his tininess to make it in the Premiership in a creative role (Zola being the obvious one which springs to mind) but I hope he is made of very stern stuff if we are going to sign him. Teams will simply try and break him in half and it won't be pretty.

i believe that even tho villa would be a great player in our team, i agree that arshavin would be a better player to target... he would be cheaper, a lot cheaper than villa and would indeed suit our system better. i say sliva and arshavin

I would say you got the second part almost right Mick, Torres and Villa didn't look very good together last night.

However, I can now understand why Torres doesn't score that many for Spain, their build up is so slow and laborious that by the time the ball reaches him he has no room to move and no chance of using his pace.

I still think in the English game with our more "impatient" style of football the partnership might work.

I agree that there would be a certain lack of depth from the pair, but they both use the wide areas well, and I certainly don't think either is a striker that feeds on crosses so maybe we could still use Gerrard (or a creative player)behind them to create depth.

My only concern would be similar to last seasons when we played Torres as the lone front man.........neither of them are adept at holding the ball up.

It would be similar if we got Arshavin or Silva instead of Van der Vaart, except I think they would start out wide more and drift in, rather than playing central.


On your point about Silva. Its the one thing that worries me about him as well mate. He does tend to run with the ball which can lead to a few crunching tackles. Which is also the reason that I think Moderic will be a success at Spurs while being of similar build........ he doesn't hang on to the ball but plays it first time.

Don't worry about getting bullied, he played in Eibar. The Segunda Division is not the Spanish Primera wanabes, but a competition of hard tackles. You don't get much first touch football there but physical one. Ask Coleman, who could not believe when he was playing in a muddy northern stadium under heavy rain, he thought he was playing in the middle of England (including a bunch of fans with Scottish skirts known as the Eibarpool supporters).

The Segunda Division is full of leg breakers, not Ronaldinho wannabes, so when it comes to bullying don't worry.

You might have noticed though he's not a proper winger. He knows to do the role, but he likes to roam to the middle. Yesterday he wasn't particularly accurate in the shots from outside the box, but I think you might have noticed he doesn't have a bad technique at that.

Something else you didn't like about him mate? (with all the I know it's early disclaimers, do not worry to be accurate, it was just a game watching him).

Silva is more solid than spectacular. The kind of player that might not be man of the match often, but always you say "good game".

I must have been watchig a different game, I really liked the look of Silva, I think he would be a great addition to the team, he's quick and can deliver good balls into the box, you have to remember that last night he was up against probably the best defence in the world!

Possibly but i have seen him a few times and he doesnt seem to get bullied off the ball easily.
I remember watching him against England in a friendly a while back and he was up against Gary Neville, Neville tried to bully him in that game and he was up for the fight and gave as good as he got.
