Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Skysports.com understands that Manchester United and Liverpool will bid for Southampton starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the next 48 hours.

The 17-year-old Portsmouth-born midfielder is regarded as one of the country's brightest talents having won rave reviews from his 14 starts for the League One outfit.

Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring in Tuesday night's 6-0 thumping of Oldham and he picked the perfect game to shine with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and Liverpool director of football strategy Damien Comolli watching in the stands.

Ferguson was believed to be at Boundary Park to assess the progress of on-loan keeper Ben Amos, although he was also able to kill two birds with one stone by seeing Oxlade-Chamberlain at first hand.

The two Premier League giants are not the only top-flight clubs keen on securing the starlet's signature, which is expected to cost in the £10million region.

Liverpool see the teenager, dubbed the new 'Theo Walcott', as the perfect support striker for Fernando Torres and they are already building for the future having snapped up exciting talent Raheem Sterling from QPR last year.

New Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has gone back to old club Blackburn to make young striker Jason Banton the first signing of his second spell at Anfield.

Dalglish has snapped up the former England youth international after Rovers let him go because he was growing unsettled.

Banton joined Rovers from Arsenal - where he also became fed up at his lack of progress through the ranks - two years ago, and he had been pushing for a first-team squad slot at Ewood Park.

The 18-year-old is a tall, fast striker and was top scorer in Rovers' academy side in his first full season at the club but fell out with members of the coaching staff and was released.

However, the Londoner has now walked into Anfield, where he will get a deal until the end of the season - and the chance to impress Dalglish.

I really dont understand the whole situation ...

I watched the match last night and wondered what the f**k is going on .... in the first twenty minutes we had the desire and belief and then .... it was poor.

This whole post is about buying players and I fully understand how you/we are feeling but aparently the whole Blackpool team cost 5 million ....!!!!!!

5 fecking million .... and we cant a group of blokes to show the desire to wear the shirt.

As they said on Sky News we could sell torres and buy the whole of the Blackpool Team.

I am sorry but there is something wrong somewhere ...

I you lot cant see it I certainly can.

That's from the Daily Mirror isn't it? Cannot see this anywhere else.

Everyone raving about this kid down here at the moment. I manage a college Sports Academy and our football program is linked with Salisbury City FC who played in the conference last year until they got dumped down for financial reasons. Last May our lads (who form the Salisbury youth side) played against Saints reserves so I got to see this lad Champberlain from the dugout. Obviously it's a completely different level but he was very impressive, lightening quick and clever with the ball. He gave our left-back a torrid time and bagged a hatrick in 60 minutes. Not sure about the soprt of price tag that's being bandied around though and it seems to me we need players who are able to contribute immediately.

Hopefully the owners can see they simply have to get their hands in their pockets. All the talk from them (Hodgson and now Kenny) seems to suggest that they were not really looking to spend until the summer but we desperately need a few new players to come in and lift the gloom and malaise on the club coz it seems that Kenny's prescence alone is not enough to do it. We need a Centre-Half, a forward and a wide-man desperately. I would actually put the Centre-half at the top of the list. We don't look capable of keeping a clean sheet away from home. Everyopne raves about what a good player Agger is when he's out injured but I always notice the praise gets a lot quieter when he's actually fit and playing. Skrtel isn't up to it and neither is Kyriakos unless they have Carra there to look after them. All those idiots who said Carra wasn't even our best defender anymore need to ge ttheir heads tested coz we are missing him terribly at the moment. It might be worth giving young Kelly a run in there but i'd like to see him stay at RB ahead of Johnson for the foreseeable future. Would love to see us spend a few quid and go out and sign Hangeland but I suspect the owners would want to buy someone a few years younger. Up-front, I see we're being linked with Negrado again and I must admit I was impressed with the lad earlier in the season. As for a wide-man i've got no idea, I see Bentley has just gone to Birmingham on loan and I wonder if he might have been worth a shout? City might be willing to let Wright-Phillips out on loan for the rest of the season given that we are no longer rivals (how embarrasing is that) to them this season.

Dalglish commented: "I don't know if there are players coming in or out. I haven't inquired about anybody."

am i the only one that is very worried about that? not only by what he said but by the way he looked when he said it.

almost looked like he had given up asking for new players.

Yeah it's a worry however, the fact we still do not have a CEO and that John Henry has been stateside for a month probably hasn't helped. Henry is over the derby and alledgedly staying for a while so hopefully there will be some advances here. Also worth noting that hardly anybody has done any transfer business in the EPL so far. I would suspect that Commoli has been idnetifying targets though as his comments about Kenny and transfers at the weekend must mean that will be something to spend. fingers crossed there is. There are always loan options particulalr y given that we are now scrapping for our lives rather than challenging for the Champions League places. As sad as it is, it might be worth sitting under the Spurs/City tables in the hope of a few scraps. the likes of Pavlychenko, Krancjar, Wright-Phillips, Michael Jonhson etc might be worth an ask. I wouold have been happy to have gone for Bentley, it certainly beats sticking Mereilles out there.

Agreed about Carragher, we definitely miss his influence at the back, still our best center half.

I live down in Cambridgeshire and my local league side is Peterborough United. They are eighth in League one at the minute but are the top scorers by some way in the division.

Their main playmaker is a left winger called George Boyd. I have been watching him for three or four years now, he is still only in his mid twenties and there are a lot of clubs sniffing around him with a price tag of around 2 million.. The club need to sell to balance the books and have already offloaded the top scorer Mclean to hull city for peanuts.

If Kenny still has the knowledge of the lower leagues he used to he will be looking at Boyd i am sure. This lad has skill, can cross, take players on and dribble.

Not a well known player.. but one capable of steppping up to the PL in my opinion.

Kenny is simply not going public and making any bold statements about the fact that we might spend a few quid. He doesn't want to a continuation of what has happened for the past few years with LFC's story being played out in the press.

He (and Commolli) will have their eyes on players I bet. He has only been in post 3-4 days so give him time to make some of these transfers happen FFS.

We are not the only ones quiet in this window as yet...

Eccleston gone on loan to Charlton. Good for him but if we lose a couple of our already limited number of strikers it leaves us a bit short to say the least.

We desperately need new players, almost every position lacks quality.  Never saw the squad so poor and full of mediocre players.

We have players like Konchesky, Poulsen, Jovanovic, Kuyt, Lucas, Skrtel, N'gog etc none of whom are good enough to be in the first 11 or barely good enough to be squad players.

Liverpool will never challenge for the title with so many players of this standard in the side.

We can't sell konchesky till the summer, as he has already played for 2 clubs this season :(

The fact that Kenny played Johnson in front o him at LB tells you that he isn't fancied by the management. Expect he will be dumped in the reserves until the summer.

Should never have been allowed to wear an LFC shirt!!!
