I don't think its harsh to critice footballers who hugely have underperformed despite costing millions in transfer fees and wages.
Igor is an adult and he gets paid a hell of a lot of money to do his job, and up to now, he hasn't done it.
Its true that he was playe out of position a lot by Houllier, but given his wages, I'd expect a bit more flexibility out of him. It wasn't as if he was asked to play in goal or lead the line up front.
Also, I think people are looking at Igor's past with rose tinted glasses: Igor wasn't all that hot when he arrived at Anfield in late 2000 despite being played in central midfield.
Don't get me wrong, I am very happy that Igor is improving this season, but its long over due: its taken him almost 4 years to make his mark and if he were in any other profession he'd be long out of a job.
I'll get roasted here again for harking back to the past but pre-Sky TV days footballers that came to this club got on with the job. Gary Gillespie and Gary Ablett were not the most gifted of footballers, nor was Barry Venison, and they were rotated all around the pitch but they got on with the job and didn't complain.
I also distinctly remember Igor having a nickname on this forum last season called "trashcan". The way I see it Igor was abysmal for 4 solid years here and he owes the club and the fans a huge improvement, which, at least, he is beginning to show.
