the only 3 id say are possible targets are Torres, Trezeguet and Bent
personally id be very glad to see owen back but just cant see it happening... id be the 1st to go buy the no.9 jersey wit owens name in the back ! if i was rafa he'd be my 1st option with villa and torres as a backup plan ! injury prone or not... he still is one of the best strikers in world football and is proven is the prem !

tevez is a long shot with a price tag of 30mill or so and etoo and henry are going to be in barcelona next season... villa will only be going to chelsea if he leaves i think but most likely he'll stay with valencia for 1 more season !

For the umpteenth time of mentioning it and for the outside chance that it could happen, despite the baggage and disregarding the lads dubious (unforgivable?) leaving of Liverpool a while back....

I still say the buyout clause represents extremely good value for money. Should Rafa eventually succumb to triggering it.

This may happen as a result of two instances:

a) Whether or not his 'rumoured' primary targets are signed sealed and delivered.  And until July 1st onwards...none of us can determine that state of affairs from happening or not with any true foresight other than pure speculation and the interpretation of noises emanating from the camps of the proposed players. Much like the odious media are currently doing. And most likely misinterpreting.

Or b)  Whether or not the benevolence of the manager becomes tested enough due to a lack of movement through the failure of the above dealings to actually allow enough water to have passed under his metaphorical 'bridge' and realise that wherever Michael Owen goes...there will inevitably be goals. Unfortunately, plenty of time on the treatment table thrown into the package as well.  However, the same fate could of course befall ANY new investment.

But the release fee alone, expected to be in the proximity of £9 million, in my book represents a gamble worth taking when you consider the benefits of a fit, happy and productive Owen. This would free up the necessary expenditure for both a second striker and a left sided attacking midfielder with any luck.

The question remains, Could Owen win back the trust of both the fans and the manager?   Answer to that i suspect would be a resounding yes, should the lad bag his first brace of the season at Villa Park. Any of these lot are going to be a risk....We need to hit the ground running come August. The unsettled aura surrounding the side last year did interminable damage that simply could not be recovered before the fat lady inevitably sang her heart out, sometime around Halloween.

My heart really does say Tevez, Eto'o or a David Villa.  But the head reckons it would be a far smoother transition choosing someone who lets face it, is never going to be welcomed back like a long lost Robbie Fowler was or Rushie when he came home. He would have to earn that respect all over again. Maybe the Michael Owen of 2007 is a bit more mature? As well as a tad richer: Both in monetary terms along with the experience of realising that the grass really is never greener away from your comfort zone.

But, the idea isnt THAT unthinkable is it?  There are going to be a few that will defiantly call against it.  But id be willing to bet somewhere deep inside the heart of Michael Owen (the Liverpool FC version: lets not beat around the bush, England is always going to enter the arena where the lad is concerned)...is a whole shed load of regrets that he might just fancy laying to rest someday soon.  Could do a lot worse for me.

The grabbin' get!    :glare:

And even despite this from todays Timesonline:

Spot on, mate.  Injury concerns aside (as much as that's possible), Michael Owen is proven class and is a snip at 9 million.  And, you're so right...he'd come back very, very hungry to atone.  Swallow your pride and get him in Rafa. :nod

Trez-the-Gay

i would put me money on Torres, got a feeling he will be our big signing

not sure if this is good or not

Torres - unlikely
Bent - No
Henry - No - Barcelona
Villa - No Staying put
Eto - No way
Milto - A shock maybe
Tevez - No way - Madrid bound
Forlan - maybe, but I'll go for No
Owen - A last minute desperation buy !
(For what it's worth, I would have him back)

So basically you've ruled out all of them, who do you suggest?

I have not ruled them all out !

Milto is the one I would put money on, if I was a betting man, (which I'm not) but Owen would also be one I would consider but I think it's a long shot that may come off very late in the transfer window.

I hope that clears up what I was trying to put across.

According to the Echo Rafa has a list of 5 strikers he is interested in. The 5 Strikers are Torres, Tevez, Milito, Hunterlaar and Kone. So it looks like we can forget Owen, Trez and the rest. Of the 5 I would go for Tavez and Torres as my picks, with a saver on Hunterlaar.

I think Trezegeut just signed an extension with Juventus until 2011.

I hope we sign Tevez but quite franky I have no faith that any of these players will be with us next season.

Torres would have to be some player to justify paying £24m for and I guess he should be significantly better than other players in his age group elsewhere in Europe.

My money would not be comfortable hanging hopes on any of these names but with my heart I will say Tevez.

Liverpool will let all these players swan off to other clubs in the summer and by mid january when Craig Linfield and Peter Crouch have scored 43 goals between them in the league you will be all be asking why did we want one of these expensive over rated gits, when we had the next Robbie Fowler in our youth team all the time. Get Linfield in now, partner him with Crouch and get rid of Bellamy.
1) You'll Never Walk Alone
2) pass and move is the Liverpool groove
3) FIRST WILL ALWAYS BE FIRST AND SECOND WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING.
4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.
