For the umpteenth time of mentioning it and for the outside chance that it could happen, despite the baggage and disregarding the lads dubious (unforgivable?) leaving of Liverpool a while back....
I still say the buyout clause represents extremely good value for money. Should Rafa eventually succumb to triggering it.
This may happen as a result of two instances:
a) Whether or not his 'rumoured' primary targets are signed sealed and delivered. And until July 1st onwards...none of us can determine that state of affairs from happening or not with any true foresight other than pure speculation and the interpretation of noises emanating from the camps of the proposed players. Much like the odious media are currently doing. And most likely misinterpreting.
Or b) Whether or not the benevolence of the manager becomes tested enough due to a lack of movement through the failure of the above dealings to actually allow enough water to have passed under his metaphorical 'bridge' and realise that wherever Michael Owen goes...there will inevitably be goals. Unfortunately, plenty of time on the treatment table thrown into the package as well. However, the same fate could of course befall ANY new investment.
But the release fee alone, expected to be in the proximity of £9 million, in my book represents a gamble worth taking when you consider the benefits of a fit, happy and productive Owen. This would free up the necessary expenditure for both a second striker and a left sided attacking midfielder with any luck.
The question remains, Could Owen win back the trust of both the fans and the manager? Answer to that i suspect would be a resounding yes, should the lad bag his first brace of the season at Villa Park. Any of these lot are going to be a risk....We need to hit the ground running come August. The unsettled aura surrounding the side last year did interminable damage that simply could not be recovered before the fat lady inevitably sang her heart out, sometime around Halloween.
My heart really does say Tevez, Eto'o or a David Villa. But the head reckons it would be a far smoother transition choosing someone who lets face it, is never going to be welcomed back like a long lost Robbie Fowler was or Rushie when he came home. He would have to earn that respect all over again. Maybe the Michael Owen of 2007 is a bit more mature? As well as a tad richer: Both in monetary terms along with the experience of realising that the grass really is never greener away from your comfort zone.
But, the idea isnt THAT unthinkable is it? There are going to be a few that will defiantly call against it. But id be willing to bet somewhere deep inside the heart of Michael Owen (the Liverpool FC version: lets not beat around the bush, England is always going to enter the arena where the lad is concerned)...is a whole shed load of regrets that he might just fancy laying to rest someday soon. Could do a lot worse for me.
The grabbin' get!
And even despite this from todays Timesonline:

Fernando torres
darren bent
thierry henry
david villa
samuel eto
diego milito
tevez
diego forlan
michael owen
Trez-the-Gay
i would put me money on Torres, got a feeling he will be our big signing
not sure if this is good or not
Torres - unlikely
Bent - No
Henry - No - Barcelona
Villa - No Staying put
Eto - No way
Milto - A shock maybe
Tevez - No way - Madrid bound
Forlan - maybe, but I'll go for No
Owen - A last minute desperation buy !
(For what it's worth, I would have him back)
So basically you've ruled out all of them, who do you suggest?
