Next season we will have a superb back 4 with plenty of ball skills, strenght and pace. We will be a lot harder to break down and we will not need Hamann to babysit 5 yards in front of our defence.

Do you think so?

I beg to differ. Sami has proved how influential he is, and displays against Juve, Milan and Chelsea in the Champions League alongside Carra are testament to the fact.

I also think that Pellegrino was brought in to give sami a rest, not as an alternative.

I beleive that Sami has a couple of good seasons in him yet.....

Agreed....Hyypia has been as solid a defender as any in the premiership for the last 5 seasons and I think he will still do a job for at least one more season. I suspect a centre back will be bought, not a high profile signing but someone who can learn a bit from Sami and Carra, one for the future as it were....Sami is going nowhere though!!!

pace pace pace, what the hell is this obsession with the fact that you have to have pace to be a top notch defender? john terry has got no pace but do you hear chelsea fans moaning about this?

sami proved last season that he still has a fair bit to offer us. i think we'll see an new centre back this summer but if that is the case, sami will still provide excellent backup.

Cmon,Hyppia has been the best defender in Liverpool for years. In the Chelsea match, who did you think kept the tall Huth at bay from using his head? While he is still useful, keep him.Carragher can't take the centre area all by himself.

Remember we lost 14 games this season. About 500% more losses than Arsenal and Man U. Our defence sucks. Plain and simple. Traore can tackle and run, but he can't position himself or pass the ball. Hyypia can tackle, but he can't run, can't pass and can't position himself. Carra must cover Hyypia's and Traore\s back all the time. Hamann must babysit in front of Traore and Hyypia and Finnan does all right nothing more nothing less. Without Hamann in front of our back 4 we are useless. Is that a proof of his capabilities, or a proof of our defenders lack of abilities, or both? That's 14 defeats explained. Our losses did not result from us having Hamann, Gerrard, Riise, Alonso, Garcia, Cisse, Baros, Morientes up front. That's for sure.

I can't wait for the new defenders to show how much better we will get as a team.

You really need to get over this obsession with Hyypia baing bad, admit you where wrong and move on.

Hyypia's positional sense is his great strength.

Hyypia is still a good defender and its much too early to sell him. However, Benitez clearly thinks he can't produce twice a week any more, cos Pelegrino played most of the games after CL matches this year. (So it wasnt Hyypia's fault that we dropped so many points since Xmas) We need 3 top central defenders, including Hyppia and JC, if we are going to do justice in the league next season. IMO Milito is the only one we could get for a realistic price

But Josemi hasn't proved himself yet,why are you talking about a new defender in case he turns out to be real good?

Hyypia had a horrible game tonight. Finland lost at home to Holland 0-4, and Hyypia was outpaced and looked like a schoolboy.

Funny that, because if i told you he was world class on the performances against Juventus twice, Chelsea twice, Milan second half and Leverkusen, you'd sit there and say one game doesn't make him world class.

You can count the number of bad games he's had in his whole liverpool career on your fingers, to suggest he's average or poor is sheer stupidy. Lad, we've always known you're a numpty, lets face it Baros better than "mediocre" Owen and Hyypia one of the poorest centre halfs in the league who has no positional sense.

TBH Stu he got ripped to shreds off Van Persie, Robben, RVN and Kuijt because of his lack of pace AC Milan the first half, 3-0 against Arsenal, he will suit games in the prem where they dont have much pace upfront or on the wing, the likes of Bolton, Blackburn etc etc.
I am not saying get shut certainly not I love him hes been a rock in our defence for years, and his best work is against teams that play the long ball when he nuts it out with his bonce, but teams with pace can leave him standing.

And he was playing for finland FFS.  A poor team against one of the best in europe, of course hyypia is gonna be exposed at centre half against that mob.  Teams defend as a unit.  One quality defender can't make a whole defence solid, but a poor defence can make one quality defender look poor.
