How about helguera? - He would be cheap!

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

It seems that Real are going to try and offload him in January as his contract runs out in the summer and they want some sort of money for him. 1 million is the talking price and he is still only 30 and is a very well established centre half. Its not that hes losing his talent, its because Woodgate is back fit and they are looking for another centre half in January. He is still good in my opinion, hes cheap and he would fit in with the spanish players here so what do you think??
Im sick of new potentially good defenders, i would rather a known capable defender at this point.

He is neither potentially good nor a capable defender.
Real are notorioulsy sh@te at the back, and he is one of the reasons.
He is poor in the air and not quick enough either.
Sorry mate but not with you on Helguera at all.

To be fair i'd take him as backup. He's not a bad player at all. Just not a quality one. Why would he come here to sit on the bench though when his reputation will get him first team footy elsewhere.

Do you think he would always sit on the bench?? Im not so sure really. I think he is certainly as good if not better than Hypia and theres no reason why he couldnt push Hyypia for his place

I would rather see us buy a young up and coming or younger at least player than him, look what happened with Pellegrino !!

I wouldnt even take him in that capacity, he isn't good enough at centre half, he may be a decent back up defensive midfielder, but when you have hamann sissoko and alonso i dont think any other cover is needed.
Especially as he will be on massive wages.

Agreed Leon - we're looking for a longterm replacement for Sami, not a stop gap!

Because of his age, because of the dressing room he comes from, because of not mastering headers, he wouldn't be my first option If I looked for a center back for Liverpool, which I think we need as badly as a right winger, a) Because Hyppia is not a Saint of my devotion and b) even if he was, we should not expect that Hyppia and Carra are going to be absolutely free of injures during this long season, with many Sunday-Wednesday-Sunday games.

Bottomline: I'd sign him for 1 year and optional for liverpool second year, he's going to want 3 yeats probably and will be quite expensive (1). I definitely think that there must be better CB available out there though

Sabre

(1) I'm talking of his monthly wages, not the signing fee as he seriously doubts that Real Madrid will exten his contract.

I don't use Babelfish, although I admit it's literal translation in that case to say -- I don't like Hippya that much. English is my third language, sorry :)

I must admit that i would certainly take him at 1m for back up cover because he is certainly good enough for certain games. We cant just go out and buy first team players on big wages and have them all playing. It aint realistic, you must have players who are capable of coming in in place of first teamers and doing a job. Its just cos chelski have all the money that they are able to have first team players as back up.

If its true then Helguera gets my vote at 1m.
