Hicks Is Right: Liverpool Needs To Change
I watched the Tom Hicks interview today on Sky Sports News (SSN), the initial impression was that is was very well staged, Tom sat with his Liverpool mug and three kids sat in three different coloured Liverpool shirts.
Tom came across as a man that has the best intentions for Liverpool. And from what I have seen SSN did a very good interview.
He has been outspoken but this latest charm offensive has come way too late because he can't get away from the fact that he lied to the fans about a number of things, 1) debt, 2) stability, and 3) a good working relationship. For this he must go.
However, either voluntarily or involuntarily he has shone a light on some issues that have made us look at our club.
1) Rick Parry - The CE, a man that nearly lost Steven Gerrard. He has also lost a number of players due to his procrastination. Has failed in the last 10 years to capitalise on the Liverpool brand, yes this is an Americanism, but Liverpool is a huge club and we have fallen behind Chelsea in the money list and it can't all be down to ticket prices. furthermore, it may not be his fault directly that you can't buy a small-sized ladies tracksuit on-line, but it is his job to employ someone how's responsibility it is. He has not done that.
2) Debt - There is only on Roman Abramovich and he bought Chelsea. Liverpool does not have a sugar daddy to spend £1billion on them. New owners will borrow money to buy a club, it happens. Football is a business now, the days of the flat cap wearer with the clackers has gone. The local butcher can no longer sponsor a game. The 21st century vision of Liverpool is to borrow the money, to buy success, to fill the new stadium that will then pay the debt, it happens in all other forms of business and it works, also look at Man U.
3) 'The Liverpool way' - this way, as Man U fans rightly say has not won us a title in almost 20 years. The quiet unassuming way that Liverpool went about business was good when big money was not involved, but it is not all about spotting the young talent, you also need to buy world-class players. See Arsenal's capitulation and Man U's achievements. Because of tradition we have lost out in many ways. We have fewer corporate boxes, fewer shops abroad. As Hicks said, we only have two or three major sponsors; we need to get in the corporate game. Brand Liverpool may not 'The Liverpool way', but winning is. What's more important, tradition or winning?
However, Hicks looks like a man that is drowning and desperately trying to hold onto power by charming the audience. All the talk is that Hicks can't raise the money needed to buy Gillett shares and that Gillett will sell to DIC at the end of May, when the exclusive purchase period expiries.
But what will DIC do if they come to power? Well they have stated that the first thing would be to complete a thorough investigation of every facet of the club. What changes will that intail? It was no coincidence that as DIC's protracted 'Due Diligence' went on, a dossier was leaked to the press stating that DIC would sell Liverpool in seven years for a profit.
So I feel that more changes are to come and as it is a media world, it will be played out on SSN, the papers and the radio. It's not great and change is hard, but Liverpool needs to change.
