Come on!  Fifteen replies and no one's yet dragged out that hoary old cliche: 'we've just made our most important signing and the transfer window's note even open yet?'  Slack, slack posting people! :no

£120k is silly money but the management know what they are doing, and they will make more than this amount from Gerrard being at the club. I'm delighted at this news and just very happy in general at the moment. We seem to have some very good and sensible new owners who listen to Rafa and Rick and make sensible decisions. Bring on the champions league final and after that I really genuinely think we will have a good shot at the league next season as long as we can start well.

Id love to see him go on to be our manager some day. God knows how much he can learn from Rafa in the years to come.

Wage inflation has gone too far in my opinion. The gap between smaller clubs and larger ones is growing. As Dawson99 rightly points out, it is consumer driven, supply and demand will ultimately determine its outcome. The need to generate extra revenue in order to keep up with wage inflation has forced many clubs, just like us, to look for foreign ownership. It has also raised the need for clubs to further their commercial activities, e.g. with higher value sponsorship deals, stadium naming rights, new kits, as well as new stadia.... with more commercial hospitality - e.g. the Emirates has significantly more boxes than Highbury, and has a greater capacity to exploit the higher value customers.

Cheslea are however an exception - they have been profligate. they have achieved success in increased revenue terms but at the expense of making record losses of £140m in 2005 then £80m in 2006. The increases in their revenue are driven by their success on the pitch, of which is significantly due to massive spending on players and player's wages. It is highly unlikely that Chelsea would be able to sustain paying the wages they currently pay if Abramovich left, I can't see their revenue being high enough to generate a profit unless one of the following occurs:

a) They reduce their wage expenditure

and/or

b) They increase the stadium capacity.

At the moment they would need the commercial success equivalent of Real Madrid to come anywhere near making a profit - even then it is likely they'd make a loss of £20m.

Ultimately wage inflation will even out, clubs can only go so far in exploiting their commercial activities to try and balance the books.

As a club, we haven't come anywhere near close to reaching our revenue threshold. This is something that the new owners are specialists in. The problem we have had in my view is that we have been lagging around £60m behind Man Utd. in revenue terms but with a wage budget that is fairly similar.

Well, if his new contract is for life he better become manager! Once he stops playing, I don't think they'll keep him at 120k per week scrubbing toilets  :rasp

He is turning into more a club captain than Stevie Me recently though. The way he went to see the F.A Cup Youth team and all that.

Not happy with the amount but its parity with others of a lesses ability.

Sorry still early in the morning.

What I meant to say is he is looking more like a club captain recently. A few years ago it was all about him, him, him.

To be honest I didn't care too much for him as a person. However recently he's been a lot more pro-active in his captains role and its nice to see.
