Curiously enough Sinama Pongolle is sounding strong in Spain to be on loan, linked to Osasuna (they're going to play the Champions qualification). I recall Pongo saying he wouldn't want another loan.

But that loan could only happen if another striker came

why dudek still have the no.1 jersey

Take a look in some spanish teams Goalys seem to have the number 25 jersey even if they are the number 1 choice.

Victor Valdes, Barca
Leo Franco, At. Madrid
Pepe Reina, when at Villareal
Im sure there are a few others

Ive never understood it either but to Pepe the 25 jersey is the No.1 goaly top or so i believe any way.

I cant find any myths or official reasons on the net, but it seems to be spanish keepers mainly, maybe Sabre can help with this problem.

Back to my point about Robbie.

Do people believe he has been given his shirt number because of his importance to us this season, meaning he will be playing a lot of games and relieded upon,

or could it be just for sentimantal reasons.

I hope its the first one what do others think.

Maybe Pepe's hinting on how many trophies he'll win for us

If he plays like he did in his old days in the number 9 than fantastic but I'm not a big believer that the shirt number has any real effect on the game, although I tend to believe the number 17 jersey brings me good luck. 
To that end I think I might be getting a kit with Bellamy on the back...

I don't think necessarily that Rafa is playing number games, but it is an awesome testement to the respect he must have for God and his work ethic.  And lets face it, if you have the "9" shirt, it is most definately a motivator to wear it.  I think it means that if he works hard enough, he could well be more than a bit part player this season.  There is no reason to allocate a number that has significance if you intend to bench the player the whole time

That all said, I am made up for Robbie - Go get em lad

1st time post folks, but i've been lurking for a while.

Saw the Fowler news and basically ran here and signed up for an account straight away. Number 9!!!

Oh, and while we are on the subject of numbers - I'm glad we dont get idiots in the premiership with silly numbers like 99 and 77. They seem to be all over the place on the continant. I'm sure the porto keeper had a ridiculous one.

Squad numbers should be capped at 40 imo - I get angry when i see silly numbers.

Good 1st post mate. Numbers dont really affect the players performance obviously players prefer a certain number i.e carragher must wear number 23  but really nothing to make a fuss about. is it

Nah, I dont mind Carra wearing 23 one bit - thats his number now.  In many ways it doesnt matter - i just dont like seeing really high ones that make em look like american football players.

On the Reina point, I would have like to have seen him wear number 1 as its traditional for your number one keep to wear it, although i dont mind jerzy wearing it. Mind you, if i wasnt the number one keeper any more - personally - i wouldnt want to wear it - i would want the number 13.

I'm made up for Robbie and it may help with the confidence thing,
although from his performance last season this doesn't look to be a problem.
I think he outdid everyone's expectations, certainly mine, I'm glad to say!

He's not just playing football - he's come home.

I remember Rush in the no.9 shirt and he did wonders for us and there does seem to be something special about it.

Anyways lets hope we knock em dead and Rob gets a bag full.
