I don't agree with some of the squad numbers.
I always view numbers 1-11 as the ideal first team. You always get a few exceptions (Carra obviously favours 23), but on the whole, the majority of the first XI should be 1-11.

What I don't agree with is players in the same position with first team numbers eg Kromkamp 2 and Finnan 3. And also Kewell 7 Gonzalez 11.
It just doesn't make sense to me - but maybe I'm just old fashioned.

FFS there only numbers, cant believe people getting all hot under the collar because Dudek still has the number 1.

Yep, No disrespect meant to Sammy btw, but 4 is a classic number for a defensive midfielder. In RS the classic evolution of numbers was used. By classic evolution I mean

--4----5---6
7--8--9--10-11

This was the classic WM

Then football evolved and thee central player was put in the back to cover the centre forward, and also the "interiors" were backed to have



2------5------3
----4-------6
----8-------10
7------9-----11

From that scheme, another midfielder man was backed, to have a 4-3-3

--------1--------
2----5----6-----3
--8---4----10
7------9-----11

And from here the 4-2-2, and every other variants. That's why classically, the defensive midfielder place had the "4" in my team. Those were times in which 1-11 numbers meant something, I preffered those times rather than this nowadays 34 or 27 numbers.

Well to be honest Sammy deserves that respect to maintain his 4, but in the classic view of numbers he should wear a 5 or 6. When he retires, the 4 will have another owner!

I'm not really that fussed either BUT being a bit old school I do prefer to see the first choice 11 wearing numbers between 1 - 11.

1st time post folks, but i've been lurking for a while.

Saw the Fowler news and basically ran here and signed up for an account straight away. Number 9!!!

Oh, and while we are on the subject of numbers - I'm glad we dont get idiots in the premiership with silly numbers like 99 and 77. They seem to be all over the place on the continant. I'm sure the porto keeper had a ridiculous one.

Squad numbers should be capped at 40 imo - I get angry when i see silly numbers.

geez i have mixed feelings about this -- #9 is his rightful # but man i bought an 11 the day it was announced

all would be well if i hadn't skipped out/disrupted all those sunday school classes cos then i'd know some sort of appropriate verse to explain why 11 is still good

oh well #9 is rightous and i guess this is my penanace

Good 1st post mate. Numbers dont really affect the players performance obviously players prefer a certain number i.e carragher must wear number 23  but really nothing to make a fuss about. is it ???
