Fowler - crank up that rumour mill - Lfc have been in touch

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby ivor_the_injun » Tue Nov 16, 2004 2:40 am

Had a very interesting, not to mention confusing, conversation with a Man City supporting friend of mine, that does occasional work for a national news agency as a sports reporter.

Feel free to treat the following as rumour, but here's what he had to say:

LFC have apparently approached Man City with view to talking to Fowler about a move in January. They have sounded the club out about the possibility of taking him on loan to the end of the season with an option to buy him in the summer, and have asked permission to speak with Robbie.

Similarly interesting is that this approach was apparently made on the back of similar conversations with Real Madrid, Ipswich Town, and - intriguingly - Betis. The Real call was made on the same day as the Man City call.

He also told me that Celtic had also enquired about Robbie's availability. Bizarrely, and - he was very careful to state - very separately, a representative at Celtic had informally spoken to a representative at LFC over golf about the feasibility of buying the option to buy (!) from a hypothetical LFC player after any temporary loan period ends, were LFC to secure a loan deal for said hypothetical player.

Work that one out!

Quite confusing, no doubt about that.

My reading of it is as follows:

LFC want Fowler as cover for the rest of the season.

Celtic want to buy Fowler next season, hence them wanting to have the option to buy Fowler at the end of a loan period at LFC.

Meanwhile, there are (at least) 3 players being courted at Real (presumably Morientes), Ipswich (Bowditch) and Betis (god only knows).

if robbie DID come back. and rafa made him play well again - it would really prove beyond doubt that the man is a managerial genius following his succes with igor, djimi and even harry showing signs.

Jesus would be proud of that achievement , he'd have to miracle robbie two new knee joints and somehow reshape him into the player he was , lets face it it's been 6-7 seasons since Fowler was at his deadly best. I've said it b4 but Robbie has had his day in a red shirt and he rightly became a n Anfield great, Bringing him back would only sour the view of him. If he wasn't Robbie Fowler people would have a fit if we signed an injury prone player who is years past his best and hasn't been in form for 5 years. Lets take off the Red tinted glasses where Robbie is involved people.  He has nothing to offer us now :(

Never in a million light years will Benitez sign him. Benitez builds for the future, and he is very true to his own football philosophy. Fowler simply does not fit in. Benitez emphasize teamwork, skills and fitness. I guess we have to give Fowler two new legs, make him lose 15 pounds of fat and replace his brains if he was to impress benitez. If there was a manchester C striker coming this way it should be Anelka. He scores 3 times as many goals as Fowler, and he is still a man for the future. Fowler is a man of the past. If he returned and played his c.r.a.p overweight football here he would just destroy his reputation among the LFC fans, and that would be sad.

In all honesty, I can not see Robbie Fowler playing 1st team football again for LFC. Nice thought but I do not think it will happen. Micheal Owen will not return to Anfield as a player either.
Stevie G, might think of leaving in Jan if we do not qualify for the next round of Champs League. He is more likely to go if we do not qual' for CL' next season. Watch Barcelona here, if they win La Liga, they are looking for a top mid-fielder, SG might be tempted.
