yeah because after our best league season for years in which we should have won the title evryone could see this season coming couldn't they?

hindsight is a wonderful thing. you wouldn't have found one fan on here who wanted the manager out at the end of last season. last season i saw some of the best football i'd seen from a liverpool side in 20 years. second half of the season we were destroying everybody.

idiotic thing to say.

I knew he was a poor manager, just having a good run. You won't find a post by me saying that he should get a new contract. I saw this happening.

Ditto.

I said last Spring that I'd be happy for Benitez to stay IF he learned the lessons of the last two months of football Liverpool played last season.

I didn't think he would and sure enough, from day 1 of this season, Liverpool were back to their boring, conservative, negative worst.

It's clear that Benitez took fuck all from the attacking games at the end of last season.

What a dumb thing to say. Don't be such a dick. Do you actually think last season's performance warranted making a management change? Do you actually blame people for wanting Rafa to get a new contract after our efforts last time around?

He has had several dodgy campaigns. I'd have given him a 1 year rolling contract, or at the very least a provision that if he fails to qualify for the champions league he can be sacked with no compensation.

Football doesn't work like that though, Rafa would not have signed a one year rolling contract and for the club to have offered one would have been a/ a vote of no-confidence and b/ disresepectful. St.Mick hits the nail right on the head when he says 'hindsight is a wonderful thing'.

Surely it would have made sense though to link a 5-year contract to tangible and measurable achievements, such as, "if you do not attain Top 3 next season, you will forfeit half your salary / have the last year of your contract annulled / will in some other way be held accountable for your actions..."
It's the way of the real world : performance related pay. If you don't do the job, you'll lose out as a result...

There may well be one in there mate - while there also maybe not and he has been guarenteed at least a couple more seasons to see what happens

I still haven't voted, i'd say 75-25 against as things stand. I wasn't really expecting anything from yesterday's game so things haven't really changed for me. I don't really fancy our chances right now and no doubt City ar ein the box seat. Thankfully they still have a few tough games left so fingers crossed nerves get the better of them and they slip up a couple of times. It looks like we need to win virtually all of our remaining games, I'm guessing we can maybe get away with a draw in there somewhere. Hopefully Rafa will take something from the Portsmouth match last Monday. Play our most skillful front five and get after teams from the off. Torres has hit scoring form and that is a massive plus for us, just put 4 proper ball players in the team around him and let them play, PLEASE!

close Scott 54-55 in favour of us finishing fourth - tho the poll was started a while ago
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

Mate, Torres ploughs a lone furrow up front, with NO support from midfield. Nobody making the charge from the middle of the pitch. Nobody to pick a ball out of nowhere and place it on a plate for him.....
Torres is not going to save this season on his own, that's for sure.

That's why i'm preying Rafa was paying attention during the Pompey game. I can understand the set-up at Trafford yesterday but for the rest of our fixtures we MUST play the likes of Gerrard, Aqualani, Babel, Yossi and Maxi in and around Torres. All intelligent players with technical ability, attacking instincts, and good MOVEMENT off the ball. Let Masch sit in front of the back 4 and let these lads play, it's our only hope to finish in the top 4. Torres can't do it all on his own but with the right players around him.

Spot on, Scott.  The formula is there based on the performance against Pompey...Rafa just needs to go for it, like we did down the stretch last year.  Get bodies in and around Torres for support and we'll have a shot.  Play all the spoilers, sit back and look not to get beat in these matches and we'll be fighting for the Europa places IMO.

That's the sad thing about it Bob. We know there's attack in the team, but the football we see week in week out, is the most impotent rubbish.

I really though Liverpool had turned a corner at the end of last season.
