Well Arsenal look they will lose to Chelsea, which makes me nervous about them on wed. as they will be desperate not to lose three in a row. In contrast if we can beat them at the Emirates, it will be huge.

yep.

it's the worst league i can ever remember this season. as garbage as we've been at time, you can't underestimate the benefit of experience when it comes to finishing in the top 4. we're notoriously a better team in the second half of the season and i see nothing in man city, spurs or villa to say that they'll finish above us.

I said at crimbo that we would be in the top four with a game or two spare, meaning by 4 or 5 points.
I`m sticking to that.

Can you imagine the uproar among all the journalists if that happened. That would make me so happy.  :buttrock

if one thing p!sses me off more than the rubbish we'v played compared to how good we can actually play, its the fact that ferguson predicted we wudnt be challengin for the title. 17 pts outta 21 is damn good regardless of who we'v played given our bliiiiiiiip from early on but then barrin a miracle 3rd is best we can get. and i hate the fact he's right. again.
Stu Averill, a wannabe Scouse/Scot. I remember the good times & have faith in them comin back

Beside the Hillsborough Flame, I heard a Koppite mournin, "Why so many taken on that day?" Justice has never been done. But their memory we'll carry on. There'll be Glory Round The Fields Of Anfield Road

Arsenal and Man city away are vital fixtures in the race for 4th, ill see where we are after that before i start getting my hopes up, but things are looking positive for the first time in months! hopefully we really have turned a corner this time

It's gonna be a rough ride, we've been on a great run now but I don't 100% believe it will happen, these next two games are massive games for us if we can pull out either 2 wins or 1 win and a draw it'll be a huge boost.  Drawing both would kinda be a bit of a let down imo and losing one or two is not something I want to hear about over and over on the boards.

Because whether a run is easier or not is subjective, can depend when you play a side and with 13 games left we should be playing mostly the same sides so where's the point?!?

As for why I didn't put higher than third, the goal (sadly) is to finish fourth and anything better than that won't make us any more in the Champions League. If you must then consider it "fourth or higher", you can always state you think we could finish third but then that might simply be an over-reaction to the goners losing yesterday. We may well lose at their's, but if you want a comparison then we've yet to travel to the Emirates and Old Trafford, and have to entertain Chelsea, while the goners have played Chelsea and the mancs home and away.

Or to sum up on the issue of 3rd vs 4th, let's concentrate on getting over the finish line in the top four and into the next heat and worry about whether we beat anyone when we're home and dry. Man City are still our bigger threat, if we can finish 3rd then I'm damn sure they can too. (or put another way, Arsenal can as much finish outside the top four as we can in the top three)

EDIT : to throw in an "interesting stat" I noticed earlier, our run of four clean sheets in a row is the joint third best run of clean sheets under Rafa. Our best is a staggering 11 in a row back in 05/06, the next best a run of five in a row and then six instances of four in a row. The 11 in a row is impressive, but perhaps despite a reputation for being tight defensively, five in a row (in all competitions) is a bit disappointing for second best.

It's sods law that the one season we have a decent run post New Year is the one season we had a poor start.

07/08 Pre-xmas : P17 PTS 33
07/08 Boxing day to end of February : P9 PTS 14

08/09 Pre-xmas : P18 PTS 39
08/09 Boxing day to end of February : P9 PTS 16

09/10 Pre-xmas : P18 PTS 27
09/10 Boxing day to end of February : P7 PTS 17

And we're only a week into February, normally this time of year is when our title challenge fizzles out, this year we're picking up points when our title challenge long since fizzled out. I think the above is good as it really shows how poor we have been this season, we may have recovered but making a title challenge is a bit fanciful.

By 25 games of 07/08 we had the same number of points as we have now, we finished on 76 and fourth. By 25 games last season we had 54 points, 10 more than we have now, and we finished second. Maybe that 07/08 comparison will convince people we can/will finish in the top four, but that season Arsenal finished on 83 points and above us.....................
