Figo, still a possibility?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I'm a bit annoyed with Figo messing us about like this but I want him to come to Anfield, we have a young squad and a player like him can give the others a lot of experience, I know he's 32 but he can still produce the goods and still has another 2 good years in him :;):

at the end of the day, i still think we will see figo in red. he's playing hardball with madrid and with the wages he is on, they will capitulate. i agree that he still has a good 2 years left in him.

Rafael Benitez has refused to be drawn into speculation regarding Milan Baros' Liverpool future.
The Czech star hasn't been involved in either of Liverpool's first two Champions League games this season, with many people suggesting the Reds don't want their player cup-tied ahead of a possible move from Anfield.

Aston Villa continue to be linked with a swoop for the 23-year-old, but for now Benitez is concentrating solely on tomorrow night's game with FBK Kaunas as the Reds look to book their place in the third qualifying round of the competition.

The Liverpool manager insists he is more than happy with Baros contribution to the pre-season campaign so far.

Speaking at a press conference in Kaunas Benitez said: "Milan is a good player, he is working well and scoring goals in pre-season. I am happy with him.

"At the moment I'm thinking about tomorrow's game and not about offers for our players. Whether he plays tomorrow or not it doesn't matter, he is still our player. He is here with us, he is in the squad and gives us another possibility."

Benitez also refused to comment on stories coming out of Spain that the Reds are closing in on a deal for Real Madrid star Luis Figo.

Benitez said: "I have no news. I have been flying this afternoon. All I can say is he is a good player."

:suspect: And I thought the Figo fiasco was all over.

He probably will sign, its stated in todays paper that its just an issue of Real paying up the last year of his contract.
They either compromise and give him some sort of pay off, or they are stuck paying his full wages for a season when he is not in their plans.
I think he will be our player by next week.
It has surprised me that we havent made an enquiry about Pires though, he is obviously not happy with what Arsenal are offering and with Vieira already sold i'm sure he might fancy a move to the European Champions, he is only 31 (not past it imo) and will guarantee 10-15 goals in the Premiership over a season.

This is getting real old real fast. Either he comes, and we're happy, or he doesn't, and we can happily concentrate on finding an alternative. It's starting to feel as if he's just screwing us around now.

I think that there is a good possibility that his statement that he was going to stay at RM was just to put it right on their toes. He may be a bit cleverer than people think and I'd love to see him in red next season.

Internazionale are understood to be leading the chase to sign Real Madrid star Luis Figo.

Liverpool are still competing for the Portugal international's signature but sources in Milan claim Inter are keen to progress negotiations on Tuesday.

Figo's agent Luis Vicente has been in Italy discussing the move with intermediaries Giuseppe Tirri and Ernesto Bronzetti.

A two-year contract awaits Figo at Inter and he could depart Real's tour of Asia in order to finalise a move to the Nerazzurri.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has appeared to indicate that the Merseysiders may need to look elsewhere.

"That one's been a little quiet," he informed Sky Sports News. "He's obviously away with Real Madrid at the moment.

"I guess we'll see over the next few days but [there's been] nothing over the last day or two.

"He's an option but there will be other options.

"We're delighted with the acquisitions we've made so far, picking off our targets one by one.

"You never get 100 percent of the targets you're looking for but, if we don't, we'll move on and do something else."

Inter are also in talks with Real over a deal for Argentinian defender Walter Samuel.

The centre back had a poor first season in Spain and could switch to Serie A on a year-long loan deal with a view to a €17 million move.

According to SSN he is set to sign for Inter on a free. They talked about how the relations between Real and Inter being better than Real and Liverpool were a factor. I agree with relations being better with Inter but what a load of :censored:, if he is in the end going for free then it must be up to him where he goes. If he goes to Inter it will purely be due to his Wife/money/location and not for footballing reasons anyway so it is no loss to us then.

If he comes he will be a God if he doesn't he will be a Devil...

How the hell are Inter's relations with Real better??

There was SERIOUS bad blood between those 2 over the transfer of Ronaldo a few years back, there were even claims by Inter that Real hadn't paid the full transfer fee and were playing Ronaldo in games illegally.

Maybe there's been some sort of reconcilliation I haven't heard about

Daily Mirror reports something different

RAFA BENITEZ hopes Luis Figo will be lured to Anfield by a £60,000-a-week contract offer.
The Liverpool boss is still waiting for news from Real Madrid over the proposed transfer of the Portuguese winger as he prepares for his side's Champions League second qualifying round tie with FBK Kaunas tonight.

Reports in Spain suggest Figo will finally resolve his dispute with the Madrid giants when he returns from the club's pre-season tour of Japan later this week, clearing the way for a move to Merseyside.

Benitez has revealed that he will buy a right-sided midfielder before the start of the new Premiership campaign.

And after initially dismissing Liverpool's chances of signing Figo, 32, the Spanish coach revealed yesterday that the deal could be back on.

"We are waiting for news, we have heard nothing as yet," he said. "We are in Lithuania and he is flying from Japan so maybe we will hear something later in the week."

Figo has been in dispute with Real over the payment of the final year of his contract.

With Liverpool offering a massive cut in wages of around £60,000 a week, he wants to be paid up by the Spanish club.

They have so far refused, saying that he must be paid by the club he agrees to sign for. But Madrid don't want to be lumbered with a player who is no longer in their plans for another season and will finally accept a compromise solution.

Benitez also indicated that there could be some progress in his attempt to offload Milan Baros. The Czech striker is likely to be on the bench against Kaunas this evening, but it will be a major surprise if he is used.

Aston Villa have been tracking Baros and are expected to table an offer of £5m on Liverpool's return this week
