I thought this was the first season for this competition  ??? That one in 2001 was the UEFA Cup wasn't it and teams weren't parachuted into it out of the Champions League. Apologies if I'm wrong, but I thought also the number of Champions League places available to the top countries was also less, so you got better teams in the UEFA Cup.

I personally think we may as well try and win it now we're in it, but I can see little point in trying to big the competition up by erroniously comparing it to previous ones. I actually think we may well win it, and I'll be very happy to win something after four seasons, even if it is only this. That is of course just so long as those who support Rafa FC as opposed to Liverpool FC don't use the win as some kind of surreal justification for hero worship, and advocate plunging us further into the abyss with the commencment of yet another five year plan. I hope we win it but lets keep it in perspective if we do.

I don't expect us to overcome Benfica to be honest. Their footie this season in the Disney Cup has been pretty impressive. I don't think Rafa has the nous to turn them over, tbh...
And even if he DID - either Valencia or Atletico would be too strong for us...

It was still the same standard of teams back in 2001 - teams like roma and barce etc .

If we win it and i hope we win it they i will celebrate the success of the Liverpool team -manager and players and it will be another trophy for the cabinet . While it isnt as good as two other trophies its still up there as a major comp .

That's some good positive thinking right there.  :no
I can't believe that I get accused of being negative on this forum.

Yes I'll celebrate too but I won't lose sight of the bigger picture. It'll be nice for the manager to give the club a trophy after four barren seasons before he goes on his merry way, but go on his merry way he must. To be totally honest if winning it made it a certainty he was going to stay, I personally would hope for the longer term good that we don't prevail.

Changing the manager at the end of the season is that crucial IMHO. Get that wrong, and next season we may find ourselves not actually managing to finish above Birmingham, something which all being well we ought to just about manage this time around. We still have a two point cushion on them I think.

what i don't get is that there seems to be a general consensus that glory hunters are a pretty undesirable species of fan. but then its also apparently ok for fans to only want to win the big competitions and not to win games in so-called mickey mouse competitions. isn't that glory hunting by another name?

winning games is winning games, and winning cups is winning cups. its the reason why most of are football supporters isn't it?

Why mention birmingham mick when we are also above both city and villa and only one point behind spurs in 4th place ?

The bigger picture - is that not to win trophies ?

Who says he must go on his way ? What you fail to say in that paragraph is the phrase "IN YOUR OPINION" because that is all it is .

Where as In My Opinion he will be here next season and will be given the chance to turn it back round and get back to the level he produced for us the previous 5 seasons as opposed to reacting just because of one below par season .

Whats f'ucking laughable is how many people are knocking this competition, "Disney Cup" etc and then going on to say how many other teams in the competition are "too strong for us"  F'ucks sake just how bad are WE if we can't win the "Disney Cup" ? just maybe it's not as p'iss poor as some make out and there are some bl'oody good sides in it. I don't know about you lads, it may not be the top european competition but I'm more than happy at the prospect of watching us play the likes of Benfica and with a bit of luck Valencia or Atletico Madrid.

Do you mean challenging for the top trophies in club football ? Something Rafa got us doing in the 5 previous seasons ?

Still trading on the ONE Champions Leagus Cup, I see....
And when did we last win the Premiership ? Not in the last 5 years anyway mate...

No i said challenging for top honours - last season was the closest we have been to winning in the last 20 years and the season before that we have been improving each season .  As for the CL we have constantly challenged and got ourselves into the final stages year on year out . For me this season is a blip - yes a big one but one i believe we can recover from and move on .

Well we are above City and Villa, but as both teams have games in hand on us, I thought Birmingham was a fairer comparison. Why not mention Birmingham anyway? I can't see why you'd get touchy about a club which is within a couple of points of us.

I agree with some of the rest of your post, although I find it a bit contradictory. Yes the bigger picture is to win trophies, I agree with that, it's just that we haven't won any. If we don't manage to win this European Fair Play Cup thingy, we won't have won anything for four seasons. During that period of time, and indeed since Rafa has been at the helm, we have had one title challenge in six seasons. We have been knocked out of the various domestic Cups by lower league opposition both at Home and Away with unnerring regularity, and we look like we are about to revert to type in terms of regularly getting our erses smacked by the other big clubs in the league after a halcyon year last term.

When you say Rafa is going to "turn it sround and get us back to a level" we were at for the previous five seasons, it reveals once again the fact that some people have very different aspirations for our club. Time to move on, he's had a good go and God knows we've given him a good try. The wheels are almost off this season, lets not wait until we are plummetting down the league before we have the bravery to believe the evidence which is before our eyes, at least for those of us who wish to open them anyway.
