It boils down to this.

Liverpool would be champions, therefore have the right to defend it over a team who finsihed 4th in the league. If the format was still that of the old European Cup we wouldn't be having this argument.

We are a G-14 Club. UEFA would go mental at the FA if the premier competition in Europe didn't have the defending champions in it, as that would mean a large loss of tv revenue etc, and Everton would more than likely fall in qualifying or the group stage.

Who is going to represent England better? no contest.

the champions league should be for champions... 4th place is just a cop out (was for us this year, cant deny im happy to be in it but we are harldy champions)

if for some dumba$$ reason everton got the nod ahead of us (if we won the thing this year lol) then it would just be a total farce

Lars Christer Olsson - Uefa chief exec - says today that "the fourth placed team should get the Champions League place".

UEFA, by not allowing the winners to defend the trophy are undermining their own competition. :angry:

the same thing happened in spain a few years back. real madrid won the competition but only finished 5th in la liga. however they were allowed to defend the trophy and zaragoza, who finished 4th ended up in the uefa cup.

FA asks for extra European place

The Football Association has asked Uefa to give Liverpool a place in next season's Champions League if they win this year's trophy.

As it stands, the FA faces an awkward decision if the Reds triumph but fail to finish fourth in the Premiership.

It could award a place to Liverpool but at the expense of the Premiership's fourth-placed side, probably Everton.

An FA spokesman said discussions had begun, but Uefa has so far indicated another place is highly unlikely.

Uefa chief executive Lars-Christer Olsson told the Daily Express: "There is no way England can have more than four teams so in we would refer it to the English FA to make the decision if it arises.

"But normally I would say that it's more important if you are qualified through your national league position than if you have won the competition."

The decision would be made by the FA's main board, in consultation with the professional game board and the Premier League.

Everton are currently four points clear of Liverpool in the Premiership, with a game in hand.

Liverpool play Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.
