rant takes less time to say than "calm statement of 'facts' " and it was a rant in the sense he was having a whinge about something that hadn't directly been asked of him.

Not that I ever listen to the 606 "rantline", but do all the people on there raise voices? Not that many of them state facts either, they voice their opinions voluntarily to get something off their chest. Maybe not the reason his was called a "rant", but not everyone has the same idea as you of what a rant is

to speak or declaim extravagantly or violently"

Origin:
1590–1600; < D ranten (obs.) to talk foolishly

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rant

I think the idea it's violent or in a raised voice is a more modern slant because a number of rants can be with raised voice. Obviously definitions will vary by source, my own interpretation is that rants don't have to be loud, violent, with raised voice or any of those aspects that have been linked within some of the definitions I found.

And the bottom line is the derivation from "ranten", if that is indeed correct of course

It's not harsh at all, he's supposedly a professional doing a job, but "airing dirty laundry". Doesn't exactly reek of professionalism, more someone who wants everyone to take notice of what HIS viewpoint is and needs to stand in front of cameras to make sure the whole world knows "I'm right and they're wrong". I doubt the owners are impressed, right rebel he is slating his employers in public.  I think my assessment may be closer to the mark than most would like it to be

I knew I wasnt making it up
