STEVEN GERRARD'S sensational form with Liverpool this year has not been enough for him to be recognised among Europe's top players.
The nominations for the European Footballer of the Year award were revealed last night with the Anfield captain (right) a glaring omission from the 50-strong shortlist.
Liverpool striker Milan Baros, however, has made the list following his outstanding performances for the Czech Republic in Euro 2004 where he finished as the tournament's top goalscorer.
Gerrard, who returned to full training this week as he recovers from a broken metatarsal in his left foot, was by far Liverpool's finest performer during the last campaign in which he was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award.
He then went on to play an key role in England's Euro 2004 campaign, scoring in the 3-0 victory over Switzerland.
Gerrard's snub is all the more mystifying given that Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has been nominated despite suffering a desperate loss of form at club level which ultimately prompted him to retire from the international stage.
Unsurprisingly, former Everton forward Wayne Rooney is on the shortlist along with England team-mate David Beckham, while the Premiership is also represented by Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Didier Drogba, Patrick Vieira, Jose Antonio Reyes and Petr Cech.
Two Liverpool transfer targets, strikers Fernando Morientes and Mista, have also been nominated.
