When things went better Kuyt never was among the first to get praises.

For me Kuyt has been poor, in a good extent, because the context of the team has been poor.

I don't think Kuyt is one of the main culprits of our situation, regardless I can think of better players to cover his position.

The term was "very poor" Sabre and with Johnson in the team you need a more "defensive" midfielder that will track back and cover. We do have more creative and nice to watch players but none that do the "unseen work" as well for his position. We need grafters in the prem and he is a grafter. As for his form, it has been indicative of the team as a whole.

No i never said that did i .

Yes their is more skillful more pacey wingers in the prem but for me the main thing is end product .

Plenty of times players like lennon and even pennant etc look lovely dancing round defenders then when it comes to a end product it is non exsitant hence little assists small amount of goals .

So while Kuyt maybe not the quickest,or the most skillful but for some reason with him being so limited and awful he seems to produce a lot more than the others in terms of end product which is the most important aspect .

I think Rafa likes the fact that Kuyt adds a strong defensive element to the play, which suits Rafa's style.  He certainly doesn't offer much in the attacking sense.

Johnson has all the qualities of a good wide man, Kuyt doesn't but he works hard ya know!

If he doesn't score, he contributes virtually nothing to the team attacking wise. Lucas and mascherano are not gonna get you more than 2 goals a season. And add Kuyt to that mix ....

Maybe Kuyt needs a few games on the bench to regain his form...composure....or whatever attacking skill/technique he has.

Its just not working out.....mis placed passes....horroundous 1st touch....slowly down the counter-attack whenever he gets the ball... Its getting painful to see his performance now.

Call me traditional.....but why can't we have a fullback who is good defensively and a winger who is good attacking wise ?

Fullback - 75% defensive qualities with 25% attacking qualities
Winger - 75% attacking qualities with 25% defensive qualities (to help out the fullback).

Is that how it has been all the way ?

But now our team...its the opposite....We have a RB who is better going forward than he is defensively. And we have a right winger who is world class in tracking back, pressing the opposition players....but attacking wise...one of the most average players in the planet.

Ah well...another thing to overlook as long as benitez is the manager i guess...

I've been a massive defender of Kuyt in the past but he's been poor this season. He looks tired. He's still chasing back like a mad thing but he's not bringing anything to the team attack wise.

I think it's a sorry state of affairs when a 'winger' is in the team for his defensive qualities.

It says a lot about the manager and his style of play.

I still think he justifies his place in the starting XI.  Every team needs a player like him in it, his attitude rubs off on the players around him and I generally think we're a better side with him in it.  Last season he added a very good end product to his game too.  He hasn't had that this season, but that's more to do with the entire team being dysfunctional rather than Kuyt being a lot worse than last season.

Other players need replacing before him.  The defence for starters (except perhaps Carra and Johnson).

People blame the lack of firepower, Torres' absence, the lack of creativity, and some just blame Kuyt.  But the main problem compared with last season is our inability to defend.  We scored 2 goals at home today, that should be enough to win.  We shouldn't be conceding 2 goals at home, but it has been the story of our season.

It is so frustrating because the players keep letting Rafa down, I mean really?  You think Rafa goes into training and teaches these guys to do that ?  There's no excuse for it.  It comes down to Skrtel not doing what he should have done, not zonal marking.

In general I agree with you.  I think there are numerous reasons why we are worse off than last season, as I've posted before.  But the defending is perhaps the biggest problem compared with last season.  I guess this discussion is for another thread though.  Kuyt is one of the players whose defending I can't fault.

Well said john. At the moment, our defense is poor and at the lowest quality. Most of the times, i pity the attackers and midfielders who worked their @sses off just to get a goal and later on let down by the sillyness, amatuerish defense. Frankly speaking, after watching agger got injured, i somehow knew that others(defense esp.CB's) will screw up sooner or later.

Tell me something please, can Rafa ever do anything wrong in your world? If we play bad then it's the players fault, if we don't have the right players then it's the owner's fault and yet Rafa just sails through completely blameless. I'm sure if Rafa fielded our under 12's in a premiership match you would applaud his actions and blame the players for not stepping up to the game, oh and blame the owners for not buying better under 12's
