Dietmar hamanns tackle - Out of order

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby anfieldadorer » Mon Sep 27, 2004 12:23 pm

"It was a look away moment," said former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrensen during the BBC Match of the Day analysis of the game on Saturday night.

"Damien Francis is very lucky that he didn't break his leg. There can be absolutely no doubt that it should have been a straight red card."

Peter Schmeichel said it was ridiculous that the challenge was worthy of the same punishment as over-celebrating a goal, with Aston Villa's Lee Hendrie the latest player to fall victim of that clampdown at the weekend.

"It's the sort of thing that referees should be clamping down on," he said.

"We want to see players celebrating goals.

"We don't want to see tackles like that."

Fortunately, Francis escaped injury and was able to continue after treatment.

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Nigel Spackman, co-commentator on Sky Sports, said: "Dietmar Hamann is very lucky — that should be a sending-off offence. It was a terrible tackle.

"Francis is lucky he's not seriously injured.

"Hamann has been let off very lightly. It was right over the top."

It was a view echoed on last night's Match of the Day 2.

Gordon Strachan told viewers: "I don't think Dietmar Hamann will be proud of that — the picture says it all."

Alan Curbishley added: "The referee is in a good position. I'm a bit surprised he hasn't shown a red card."

In answer to your "Do they always have to be negative" question ....Yes. it's the only way they can involve the Armchair supporters and make them feel part of a game that was played 7 hours earlier  ???

I agree but in fairness they didnt criticise Didi as a person but it was against the other yellow cards that had taken place that day and in that light he was extremely lucky

Baros in celebration also left the pitch which is a yellow card although thats a ridiculous rule imagine the adrenalin rush you wont be in control of yourself for a couple of minutes

Keane should have been banned for life for that tackle on Haaland. Let's face facts, he is an aggressive baboon who would be rotting in jail if it weren't for his abilities as a footballer.

i remember 2 seasons ago, hamann got a red-card against sunderland for a 2-footed challange. The thing is that hamann totally missed the player but still got sent-off. I guess these stuff even themselves out during a few seasons  :D .

But seriously, hamann is a world class player & he does not need to resort to these type of tackles. If we already leading 2-0 when this happened, so i can only deduce that it was a mistime challenge.

Just watched the tackle in question again and i really think that Didi meant no malice! It was very clumsy but i would never call it a reckless challenge.

footballs a physical sport. yes it was clumsy but there might be the occasional knock in football. And he got away with it so its over
on the negative side people just still want to compare us to the great teams of old and now we dont get the credit. its either schmeical at bbc or andy the kont grey at sky
The guy on goals on sunday said it best when he said trhat football was a physical game and although the tackle was bad, it wasnt liek the guy was a suicide bomber or anything   (well, i made the lat bit up myself, but its true)

It was a shocking tackle, but thankfully no harm done. He's made the occasional high one, but I'd still maintain that he's not that type of player.
