Crouch coming to anfield? - Deal close?

The next isue for us is the prem, and to win that we need a squad of quality in terms of depth, tactically and diversity. Crouch brings that diversibility to the squad. The little and large combo has worked well in the past.

At certain stages in the season we are going to play teams that are going to want to kick the euro champs around. Garcia wont like this nor moro. Crouch and cisse will excel at this treatment.

Rafa knows that we must adapt physically against some of the lesser teams and with crouch and Sissoko or Hargreaves in the team we'll beat them and then it is all down to our form against the top six. Quite possibly Premiership form.

did you see it when terry kicked the ball at him in semi that lad will get used to it and thrive on it. Cisse probably wasn't the greatest example but he'll cope and im not sure who will come in the summer. But you get the point where im coming from?

Well I get the point about player who will not be to bothered about getting physcial treatment and how they would be an asset in scrapy games, which you do get a lot of in the Premiership, but Cisse is not that sort of player.

If we do get Crouch for £5m, I think we'll be looking back on it next summer as a cracking bit of business. With Morientes, Cisse, Baros (assuming he stays) and Crouch - the combinations there are seriously mouthwatering. So long as our strikers aren't beset with the injury horrors of the past season, I can see a hell of a lot of goals from up front next term.

I think Crouch could surprise a lot of people.  It is also good business to pay only 5 million for an englishman, who is still developing as a player...

By the way, how many LFC players scored 16 goals last year???
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

Not sure about all competitions, but Andy Cole (!), Lampard, Defoe and Andy Johnson were the only Englishmen to score more in the league than him last term.

Our top scorers were Baros (9) and Gerrard (7). For the record, Diouf also got 9.

from todays guardian football site
--------------------------------------

Southampton have turned down a £5m offer from Liverpool for Peter Crouch. They are keen to hold on to the England striker to try to win an immediate return to the Premiership and instantly rejected the Champions League winners' overtures.

The Anfield manager Rafael Benítez has been highly impressed by Crouch, who scored 15 goals in 24 games under Harry Redknapp last season - including one in a win at home to Liverpool - and would like to add him to his forward line.

He will purchase at least one striker this summer to join Djibril Cissé and Fernando Morientes, with Milan Baros almost certain to leave before the start of next season. Liverpool must now decide whether to make an improved offer for Crouch, who cost Southampton £2m from Aston Villa 11 months ago.

Redknapp will be delighted by his board's decision to turn down more than twice that figure. He has outlined the importance he attaches to keeping Crouch at St Mary's as he seeks to win promotion, though he has not made the 24-year-old's retention a condition for his carrying on as manager. Last week Redknapp said he would understand Crouch becoming unstettled "if a big club comes in for him".

Crouch has not requested a transfer and it is likely to take an offer in excess of £7m to tempt Southampton to sell him.

------------------------------

£5m was worth a little thought i have to admit. but if rafa seriously considers raising his bid to £7m for peter feckin crouch i'm going to seriously start doubting his judgement. i mean, thats about £1m per foot!! this proves that english players are way over priced - when being sold to other english clubs. just think - owen to madrid £8m, crouch to liverpool £7m - no no no no no.

We should sign him.He could score 16 goals in a team like Southampton with few assistants. How many more can he score with better assistants in Liverpool? On the way, pick up Andrew Johnson(Palace) if possible.

It's merely the beginning of the beginning. Expect Crouch over the next couple of days to throw his toys out of the pram, Redknapp to do a bit of macho posturing, the deal to go dead for a week or so and then he signs for 5.2m. The simple fact of the matter is that Southampton can't afford to turn down such a bid for a player who will inevitably become unsettled. They know it and so do we.

the weird thing is that i'm starting to come round to it, but for less than £5m - £2.5m or £3m MAX is what i'd say. and i'd only keep him as a back up to change things round a bit. AND i'd get another decent striker in aswell. i've said before that with cisse, moro and pongo (and le tallec?) we only need one more decent squad striker not another big money transfer. but i don't think crouch is good enough to fill that hole on his own. but having him in the squad? maybe not so bad.

and besides... just think of all the funny songs we could make up.

For me it's an emphatic yes. Quote me if you like after he has come, I think the guy has the ability to be a really good player. I would go to 6m to get him and tell him from the off that barring injury he is looking at maybe 20 starts if we go well in the cups. The rest is down to him.
His career path reminds me a bit of a bloke who kicked around in the lower divisions with Millwall for years. Cumbersome fella, good in the air etc. Anyways he went on to Forest and then up again to Spurs. Got picked for England in the end and people couldn't believe it. Not him they said. Anyways, eventually he won a Champions League medal. Still playing now the fella, Sheringhams the name. Players can improve and Crouch will be a really good buy in my view.
One last thing, when blokes come on and say about various players, "yeah I'd buy him but I'd only be prepared to pay so many million" and then quote a price about 1/3 to a 1/2 of what is being asked, I ask what is the point. If Southampton have turned down 5m, what do we do offer 2? We either walk away, offer more or let 'em sweat surely? If you are only prepared to pay 2m and they want 5m then you wouldn't buy him, it's simple.
