Gerrard ruled out of Chelsea match Written by Matt Ladson on April 14th, 2009

Steven Gerrard will not play any part in tonight’s Champions League quarter final, second leg, at Chelsea this evening.

The midfielder has been struggling with a groin injury which he picked up in the first leg last week, and was an unused substitute against Blackburn on Saturday.

He has traveled with the squad to London and took part in training at Stamford Bridge on Monday night and Rafa Benitez had hinted he would be involved as a ‘calculated gamble.

However, the manager must feel it is too big a risk to play Gerrard and lose him for the upcoming League games, where the Reds are in the title race for the first time in years, seeking to end a 19 year wait for the title.

Gerrard’s place in the side is likely to be taken by Yossi Benayoun, with Dirk Kuyt on the right, Albert Riera on the left and Javier Mascherano back alongside Xabi Alonso in the middle.

I am guessing now that putting Gerrard on the bench against Blackburn was purely mind games from Rafa

Rafa clearly has his eye on the league. Shame really as I was hoping we would go all out for this one.

The skipper is struggling with an adductor injury and does not make the 18.

The Reds XI in full is: Reina, Aurelio, Arbeloa, Skrtel, Carragher, Kuyt, Lucas, Alonso, Mascherano, Benayoun, Torres. Subs: Cavalieri, Dossena, Hyypia, Agger, Riera, Babel, Ngog.

Not good at all..

I'm not confident with that lineup :(

but hopefully im wrong.

Pity Steven isn't around.

Seem to be playing a 4-3-2-1 formation, but with Masch and Lucas in the midfield I cannot see where support for Torres is coming from.

Don't feel so optimistic anymore  :(

Come on Redmen. Today, we'll have to summon up a spirit beyond that of Istanbul.

You don't think Gerrard has his eye on the league as well?  Anyway some of these post are out of line imo. Straighten yourselves out for the match, if Torres comes ready to play we will be alright, we might not make it through but we will be okay.

Surely he must have tweaked something in training on Monday.

If he's not fit he's not fit, I can accept that.  I just think there were better teams we could have picked in his absence.

FFS grow up you bunch of idiots and back the players that are out there putting in 100% effort while playing with that shirt and liver bird on their chest instead of crying like girls that your favourite new scapegoat is playing . He is a liverpool player about to play in an important game so get behind the young lad of 21 .This is an important period in our club and we all need to be together to support and remember . Its fecking hard posting on here sometimes with people forgetting what it is to support this great club and that is to back the players NO MATTER WHAT while they wear that great shirt , its what we have always done and what we should also do .

YNWA

Will always remember the 96

GOAT wrote:So he can make the bench for Blackburn but can't for Chelsea? What was the point of wasting a space on the bench if he couldnt play anyway

well that's a good question.

Anyway please show me up to be a no-nothing idiot Lucas, PLEASE.

Who knows, we beat the Mancs without Torres and Stevie and sometimes we do actually play better without Stevie. It might actually be a tactic from Rafa to confuse Hiddink as he would have been basing his game plan around man marking him, now he has to make the call on whether or not it's worth man marking Lucas, hope he does.

OK, we'll win 3-1 with goals from Kuyt, Benni and Lucas (scapegoat-galore :D  ) and we'll win in extra-time by a Carra header :blues:

Are forums not for opinions anymore?  This isn't Anfield, the players aren't in front of us, and probably will never see a word from this forum.

If people want to have a go at the players, they can.  I never said Lucas was :censored:, I just said Gerrard missing was a terrible blow and the selection is odd.  I'm more frustrated with Skrtel starting because Lucas is bound to have a good game eventually.

If this WAS Anfield, or Stamford bridge, of course we'd be backing the players 100% and singing our heads off.  But THIS IS A FORUM, AND THIS IS WHERE OPINIONS GO.

*Not saying my opinions are for slating players, just saying what a forum is*

Yes as long as they put 100% effort in and get stuck in I'll be happy but if Babel comes on with his half arsed tackles again I'll blow a fuse.

Anyway I think we're going to do it, I just have a weird feeling about it. 3-1 at full time then us to win on penalties, Kuyt getting the winning penalty.
