Champions League Squad - Hyypia left out of the 25 man list

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby JoeTerp » Fri Sep 05, 2008 5:08 am

Sami Hyypia will not be playing in the group stages of the Champions League this year. Along with El Zhar, Plessis and Insua.

But N'Gog, Riera (as expected) and DEGEN did make the 25 man roster

official uefa roster list

in case you don't know only 17 of the 25 players on the list can be "internationals" meaning trained between the age of 15-21 outside of England. And, at least 4/25 slots need to be delegated to players that trained at Liverpool.  You are also allowed to register and play as many U21s as you want as long as they have been at the club for 2 years.

Joe, ffs change roster to squad mate, its worse than saying soccer! Its like scraping your nails down a blackboard, sets my teeth on edge.

TBH people saying soccer doesn't bother me at all, but "roster" does!

when I think "in the squad"  I think on the pitch or on the subs bench.   Like when I hear "in the team" I think the starting XI.  This is the list of players who could be in the squad.

Its still a squad list mate, or at least thats what we call it. Its like when they pick 28 players for England...... its still a squad. Roster does my head in, and I am pretty liberal compared to some!(maybe not :D )

At this stage of his career Hyypia won't play all the matches, and his attributes as a player will be better used in the domestic competitions.

But, that will make us face the competition with 3 CB + the Arbeloa option? Hmmm, I hope we don't have a lot problems.

yeah I just hope that 3 centre backs and Arbeloa will be enough defensive cover for 6 games, plus the full backs and the defensive midfielders and the forwards that have now become midfield players and the 3 keepers and the brick wall and the coaching from Pellegrino, will all contribute too a solid defence for the marathon 6 games..... :D

3 keepers are too much, but an injury like Agger's last season would leave you with no cover. I don't like Arbeloa for the position unless it's a last resource.

I don;t rate arbeloa when he's so weak in the air already at right back and gets pushed around way too much , rarely offers anything going forward , it will be worse at center back where he will be up against big physical strikers such as drogba , ibrahimovic and such , so arbeloa is my last resort as well at the center back position . As for hypia being left out , i'm surprised at that , we would not have gotten that far without him last season , should have at least made the squad . My preferred defense would be below , carragher at right back , his best position is center back but he has a good footballing brain , deffo would offer more going forward than arbeloa and is better defensively as well . Skrtel at the moment is our 2nd best defender till agger returns back to his usual form , rafa needs to start giving agger matches so that he can return to his best , he's not far from it and he will be back to his best . Agger likes to venture forward and that is rare from a centre back , he also has wicked left foot , skrtel and agger will be our preferred centre back pariring as carragher is already 30 , and possibly has 2 to 3 more good years left ahead of him .

Reina

Toffehater, this SQUADLIST :D  only applies to the group stages, so we wont be facing Drogba or Ibra,  but we will face Aguero :(   (it will be hard for me to root for him to play poorly, but I am sure it will come easy when the whistle blows (avin' a laugh :D   )

Martin Kelly can also play centre back. He is kind of a RB/CB tweaner (just like Carra and Sergio Ramos :D   )

The third keeper is Martin Hansen. He is not taking up one of the 25 spots.  He us U21, and has been with the club for 2 years now.  However, I see this role of being the emergency keeper for this CL campaign as his last at the club. He is the same age as Bouzanis and Gulacsi and both seem to outperform him at reserve level. Plus, there are just a freaking ton of GK at the club; Itandje is somehow still on the books, Mihaylov is on loan in holland, and David Martin is on loan as well. And all of these people are fighting it out to be 3rd behind Cavalieri who is the same age as Reina who is still very young for a GK.

It's a key point, Joe.  No doubt Rafa has had a careful look at PSV, Marseilles and AM by now and has decided that Hyypia's aerial dominance isn't as big an asset against these particular clubs and that his lack of pace might count too heavily against him to be truly considered for these 6 matches.

I think it will be interesting to see if Hyypia starts to feature in matches either directly before or after CL games, I don't remember the list exactly but I do remember seeing that it was relatively easy compared to the normal big game sandwhich of games.  Although, I am sure in interviews Rafa will be asked, "Are these the three most important games of the season so far coming up?"

"yea clearly . . . . . . "

It would be better if the squads where increased to fifty players for the 6 group games and then add a further 20 players to include the league cup and fa cup with unlimited substitutions in all games to allow the ponsy professionals time to buy more cars and houses. We really are a selfish lot, expecting these highly trained athletes to work so hard.
