Yep, I'm bothered.

Not as bothered as the F.A. Cup, but still bothered.

Winning tournaments is the whole point.

Agreed but we don't have the same strength in depth as the other big teams so we have to be careful about how hard we try in small comps.

I can see why people would be bothered because it is all about winning. But when you look at the bigger picture, not being in the carling cup reduces the risk of first team players being injured or not being fit enough for more important games .. so in theory not being in the Carling cup means that we have an increased chance in the more important competitions.

Bav, I think you're missing the point just a little.  Being bothered by the result doesn't mean that we should have thrown Torres, Gerrard, Masch etc. into the mix--it means that we had a team on the pitch tonight that just might have been able to win the tie and some of us are disappointed it didn't pan out that way.

It's sad it's gone that way though Bav. There was a day when the cups were important to clubs.

In a couple of years, they'll probably be abandoned because of the lack of umph.

Shame though.

If you take the view that we are needing snookers a bit in the league and Champions League, then our options are slightly diminished by this defeat so yes I'm bothered. That's not to say I expected us necessarily to win there, nor that I think we didn't give account of ourselves because we did, but I'd still like to have won it.

AND I'M NOT CRITICISING THE MANAGER FOR THE TEAM HE PICKED, NOR AM I SAYING HE SHOULD HAVE PLAYED TORRES, GERRARD ETC ETC.

Spot on.  I've got no qualms with the team selected but I think we had enough about our game tonight to grab an equalizer and at least force extra time.  As it was, it was another opportunity to remind ourselves just why Babel and Voronin are not Liverpool calibre.  Some other lads with at least a foot in the 'not good enough camp' gave a good account of themselves but these two seem determined to get every supporter spitting tacks.  :no

at least Babel tried, he did a few decent things tonight. Voronin on the other hand was an absolute disgrace, im sure he must have won a competition to play for Liverpool, he was appaling, and clearly didnt wanna be out there either. I think he must have had about two succesful passes all night, plus he was at fault for the first goal and had the nerve to berate a team mate for not coming to the ball! absolute joke a player who should never wear the shirt again under any cirumstances, he can rot in the reserves.

Agreed other competitions are more important, but their are only so many cups to win in England and this is one.(and we aint won much as of late) The Finals i went to in 80s were important. And this years final will be important to both the winners and losers, i think its a shame we wont be at wembley for this.
I also think its a shame so many people don't care about this cup anymore.

Totally agree...

It was another cup competition....another chance of silverwear....

And I don't like seeing any team we put out being beat..

Some say in the big scheme of things it doesn't matter....

let's just hope this doesn't come back to haunt us....

Years ago this competition held more importance. Not so today. Times change. Am I bothered? 10 years ago, maybe, but not today. Let's be honest, who ever remembers the winners of this in the past couple of seasons? I barely remembered us getting to the final of it a few years ago and losing to a SG OG against Chelsea.

Maybe because we LOST to Chelsea? I clearly remember the last time we won it. We beat the mancs and it saved Houllier's job for another year.

I really felt for Skrtel having to cover the gaping hole Kyrgiakos constantly left in our defence ,the Greek lump takes  a fortnight to face the other direction, let alone have the mobility it takes to construct any form of tackle or indeed interception ,as for Degen like a kid running the shop in his slippers, doesn't  matter how quick you get there if you cant remember what you were running for... I also  think Spearing was well out of his depth and coupled with Plessis , we totally lacked any bite in midfield ,as for Babel this kid has some serious issues he gives real meaning to the term vacant .

However on the plus side Alberto Aquilani on this appearance alone looks to banish any lingering memories we still have of Alonso ,Liverpool look like they have found a player who could well grace Anfield for years to come ,this display however fleeting will have Torres  licking his lips at the prospect of Aquilani as well as Gerrard delivering some incisive balls to his talented feet ... Oh and Insua's goal was superb and that about sums up our involvement in  the Carling Cup

I do agree that it carries less prestige nowadays, mainly because the level of competitiveness in the league and UCL has intensified.  For the top four sides that's left it as a platform for the kids up until maybe the semi-final stages, and for most PL sides outside that group it remains a realistic target. It does, though, have a fair bit of history to it where we're concerned and it's a chance for a big day out at Wembley so it shouldn't dismissed as if it's the equivalent of the charity shield.

Don't you play at Wembley in the semi's now? It just shows how much of a joke it is when you play at the big stage twice. I thought getting to wembley was what it was all about for a one off day?
