Capt' kirk survives. - Should kirkland play

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Cap't Kirk has responded to Doc McCoy's latest 'Back Remedy' and survived a Reserve Team game. Not sure he really pushed himself up the 'Warp Factor' scale.
Is he now ready to face the Manc' Klingon Scum' on Monday night ?

It`s would be quite a match to have his comeback, if he`s chosen before Dudek. Even if Dudek`s performance has been questioned after som of the matches recently, I think it would be wise pitching him due to the fact of Kirkland`s lack of recent match-experience ???

Yeah, facing Nistelroy hunting out Giggs crosses, could be a tough baptism.

I would play him - if he is fully fit though
I still cant stand it when the opposition have a corner of somebody running down the flank and are crossing it into the box, and Dudek shows zero confidence in coming to collect  the ball, leaving himself and his defenders in a bad situation.
with the likes of Giggs and Ronaldo down the wings i think we need someone in goal who will install confidence in defenders and collect any loose ball in the coming into the box.
Also i have nightmares about the slip ups he made against the worst striker in the league (Forlan)

Prediction  0 - 2 (cisse and Garcia)

Two quotes from the Echo report on the Sunderland Reserve game:

''Kirkland (pictured) made a fantastic flying save to deny Leadbitter early in the second half, flinging himself high to his left to tip the ball around the post.''

''Liverpool couldn't kill off the visitors though, and needed a stoppage time save from Kirkland to secure the victory after Ryan had been allowed a free header in the box.''

Looks as though Capt' Kirk, could be getting ready for 'Beam me up Beni'

Matt D, Good point about Dudek being a member of the Dracula familly, particularly with Giggs pinging the crosses in. Dudek if he comes gets punchy !!
I spy danger on the horizon. :blues:

Tough call, Dudek didnt look real full of confidence in Monaco game where he was basically a spectator but certainly would be tough return for Kirky

Lazza

OK but he didn't have a lot to do either. I can't remember but has Dudek always been a bit prone, in the early days wasn't he OK.

His confidence will have been helped by his last 2 clean sheets. Monday nights match is not the correct forum to reintroduce Chris Kirkland to first team football. Rafa should and will stick with Jerzy Dudek for the match.

Interestingly United have an even greater dilemma with their keeper and I think they'll play Roy Caroll.

Yeah United's run with Keepers since Schmichael left has been amazing consider old Taggart is normally pretty canny in transfer market

Well this just appeared on LFC TV

Rafael Benitez has revealed that he intends to keep faith with Jerzy Dudek in the Liverpool goal at Old Trafford despite the fact that future England No.1 Chris Kirkland has recovered from a back injury.
Kirkland missed out on the recent England internationals after suffering his first back injury for 18 months but after keeping a cleansheet on his return for the Reserves against Sunderland on Thursday, he's ready to step up the fight for a place in the starting line-up. It appears, however, that the game against Manchester United has come too soon for the formner Coventry star though.

"He played the full game but he needs more matches," claimed Rafael Benitez of Kirkland's comeback. "He is training well and he played well for the reserves but it is too early for him on Monday. But when a manager has two good goalkeepers it is not a problem."

From the Club Website :
UNITED TRIP TOO EARLY FOR KIRKLAND
Paul Rogers 18 September 2004

It will be interesting to see if we keep a clean sheet against the Manc's whether Rafa will have the determination to drop Dudek for the next game. I think he will play Dydek right up untill his next howler, let's hope it dosn't cost us a game.
