Our staff is great, especially spotting talent.

On the only 1 or 2 make the big step, that is spot on, unless you have a real talented youth side.

Since Gary Ablett's arrival 5 of the team have already been pushed up to the reserves as well as Anderson, Antwi and Hobbs who were already there.

If Pongolle is patient his chance will come. He is different from anything else we have, speed and trickery and an eye for goal. But Flo will have to be patient and wait for the chance in the first team and when he gets it he has to grab it with both hands. Pongolle chanes are more likely to come in the League Cup, where a lot of our bit part players will play.

My starting 11 for the League Cup would be:
Carson
Darby
Paletta
Agger
Warnock
Anderson
Potter
Zenden
Aurellio
Pongolle
Linfield

rafa won't risk another burnley mate

after all liverpool are tring to compete in all competions, not send lambs to the slaughter why would you put all the youth out and risk going out early?

Hmm well it has been Rafas mentality in the league cup the past 2 seasons to put out youth players, them youth players got us to the final in Rafas first season remember, but yeah we certainly dont want another Burnley happening or crystal palace, i would put out a few of our first teamers for the league cup but with some of the young talent mixed in, it would give the youth experience while give us the chance to rest some of the first team

I think you lads are right. Despite the youth team's win last year, I don't think that many will break through. But looking at my 11 for the league cup, how many are youth team players.

Carson has played in the first team and in the champions league and is England U21's regular keeper and went to the world cup.

Darby was our youth team captain and we keep looking for cover for Finnan maybe it's him.

Palleta and Agger are young but will probably be our future centre half pairing so give them as many opportunities to play together.

Warnock has been in and out of the first team for a while now, so I wouldn't class him as youth any more.

Anderson is tipped as the star from the youth so he has to be given a go. And I think he isn't quite ready for our current squad but certainly playing in cup competitions will help.

Potter and Zenden are both first team members. So again there is more experince.

Aurellio, after his injury wont be put straight into the side so this cup may be his chance to get fit and play games.

Pongolle has been a part of the first team squad for a while and again experince and linking up with youth cup winner Linfield can only improve Linfield.

I have thought about your earlier posts and changed my mind. I don't think there is too much youth in the side I picked for the League Cup.

In a lot of yours and my starting 11 for the league we have Carson as our sub keeper and his real chane of 1st team footy is this cup.

Again a lot of us have either or both Agger/Paletta in our sides or on the bench.

Like I said about Warnock is accurate. He has been a man in the 1st team for a couple of years.

Zenden and Aurellio are both players who will be in the 1st team this year. Potter has been there but can't see him being there at the start on next year unless he puts in some brilliant performances.

Pongolle has been a big player for us in this competition recently and despite his young age he isn't youth.

So Darby, Anderson and Linfield are the only youth players in the side, so I think I have a decent 11 here, and even with your comments about too much youth 3 out of 11 isn't too much youth. Yet if you think there still is too much youth the bench will be filled with experince. Dudek, Sami H (he always gets picked) Kewell (may be his only chnace to play if Rafa doesn't use him elsewhere) Hobbs (just to play a part) Fowler (same reason as Kewell)

My first XI (without having had a chance to see any of the new boys play) is:

                Reina

Finnan   Cara   Hypia   Aurelio

        Sissoko   Alonso

Gerrard     Garcia     Gonzalez

              Bellamy

On the bench, something like:

Carson
Paletta
Fowler
Crouch
Pennant

Garcia is a bit of the forgotten man by most of you, isn't he?  I'm determined to include him, but leaves me struggling to find a balance I'm happy with in the subs bench.  I'd like to include Riise, Kewell and Zenden, but I think I need to have striking options in my substitutes...

Perhaps Garcia belongs on the bench after all?...

I don't envy Rafa this job.

When I started playing football many years ago, we played a 235 formation!

How does this sound?

                         Reina

                 Carragher   Hyppia

            Sissoko    Alonso     Gerrard

Pennant   Fowler   Crouch   Bellamy   Gonzalez

Ahh, those were the days!  :suspect:

I still remember my first pair of boots - single block of plastic molded into the shape of a rugby boot!  Great days

Why is everyone wrinting off Riise??? He's By far our most underrated player, people are just dumping him out ouf then team!!! I believe JAR is vital to the team, He's surely going to be picked ahead of Aurelio in the first instance.

It's a baffling one, as with some formations you have to leave out good players.

best 11:

               Reina

Finnan  Paletta   Carra     Aureilo

Pennant  Sissoko  Gerrard   Gonzalez

           Bellamy     Fowler

This of course means leaving out  Crouch, Alonso, Zenden, Garcia , Agger, hyypia.
I think Sissoko is a better mifielder than Alonso overall, and when xabi plays with stevie, they both play similar games. Sissoko is a good tackler and can break up the opponents play.

Europe:

               Reina
Finnan     Hyypia   Carra     Riise
Pennant  Alonso   Gerrard   Gonzalez

                Garcia /Crouch
                    Fowler/ Bellamy

Away

                    Reina

Finnan Palletta  Carra      Aureilo

Zenden  Alonso   Sissoko   Riise/Speedy G

                 Crouch
                        Bellamy.

throw pongy in for a few more games maybe.

I believe that most of the players Rafa has brought in so far are more to backup the team we have now.

Lets be honest, last season our ONLY downfall was strikeforce, Hence Bellamy.

Palleta is looking more to next season as Sami's replacement.

Pennant will get a few games just to prove he wasnt a complete waste of cash (not saying he is)

Aurelio is a good backup for Riise/Kewell, but i dont think he'll be picked ahead of Riise, JAR has proved his worth on all stages now and he's still pretty young. Also his fitness and workrate are second to none. So i do not believe Rafa will dump him on the bench so hastily

Gonzalez maybe the one who credits most from this. IMO i think Kewell will be gone by the end of the summer and Gonzalez will be laughing, if Harry does stay then he'll have to fight as Harry is starting to reclaim a bit of that Leeds (sp!t) form. What i say is that it's a shame Richie Partridge never came to the first team (think we can blame Houllier for that) because of the reserve games i have seen, Partridge is a useful player.

On the plus side, we can now rest players during the season. Even Stevie G can have a rest while we're playing some league 2 side in the League Cup (yeah, right we never get the lowest league sides)

But anyway to much gibbering on here's my team:

                               Reina
         Finnan      Carra       Sami     JAR

         Pennant    Stevie      Xabi      Gonzalez

                 Crouch          Bellamy

Subs:
Carson
Traore
Palleta
Sissoko
Fowler

The only thing i dont like is leaving Bolo and Luis out. both are excellent players, but i hope Rafa knows what he's doing (maybe waiting for players to leave???). There's gonna be a lot of rotation otherwise.

ooooooo.... might just have to change my Champ Man :p

Don't be daft, Pennant will play in more than just a few games. Who else is going to play on the right flank? Gerrard?

I expect Gerrard to play in that position in order for Sissoko to play against top teams.

There will be no ''main starting XI''. I expec that the formation will look similar against the Chelsea's and Manure's,etc.. but for every other team it will be different. It will depend on entirely who we face and where we play.

I see him more of a supersub then a player that starts week in and week out. Good player to have around though.

It will depend on who we play as I said in my last post.
