I called it early on Baros, Sissoko, Kuyt, Finnan, Carragher and just about everyone else... unlike some I don't need 38 games to decide if a player can pass a ball and is a decent player. It takes a few minutes to see the basics, a couple of games to see the detail.

But how long to see the potential?

A couple of games, to many people don't know what potential is. Players don't become something they aren't and don't get skills they haven't got. If they can't pass and control a ball or head a ball at 17 they'll never do it be the time they're 25.

Much like with Jack Hobbs, he's nowhere near good enough, absoloutely nowhere near. He's a League one player at very very best.

No offense, but you're talking complete bollox.

Another reason to get the Yankie.tw@ts out and DIC in.

Reg, if DIC come in then I think they will get rid of Rafa.

why is that?

I would say because they can afford either Riikard or Mourinho...

mourinho would be a better option as he knows what it takes to be champs. rijkaard would wanna bring in his own players then it will be back to square 1 all over again. first was the french, then the spanish, next we will promise sexy football  :D

but why do u think rafa isnt as good as the above 2?

I think Rafa out thinks himself in the league. Makes him a good European manager, but not so much in the league. I know he won La Liga twice in Spain, but I don't think he truly understands the English league. Particularly the need to get early points.

Don't think that's true at all. Not being anti Rafa here but the facts don't back that statement

This is a little out of date now (i posted this awhile ago)

But here are some net spending figures:

Net Spend 04/05 to 07/08 Season
Mourinho- £162,930,000
Benitez - £87,670,000
Fergie- £79,170,000
Newcastle United- £51,850,000
Jol-£57,050,000
Wenger -£4,120,000

Link to the spreadsheet:

Spreadsheet

Basically Benetiz was only out spent by Mourinho.

Alot of those numbers are cr@p. 10,000,000 for Tevez is dodgy reporting. There is no way they bought him for  only 10 million.

it gets to a point in time where you have to admit that using the lack of quality players in the team is just old news. i do feel we have a team capable of giving a far better challenge to the trophy but rafa just doesnt cut it as a manager in england. he is good but only to a certain extent. in europe he is the finest. but in england for reasons we never might know he just can't make it as a champion. thats the only bit where he doesnt rotate.  :D

bigmick wrote:It's an interesting first post mate and a brave one. I feel sure that somebody will rightly point out that he hasn't actually spent a NET $170 million because he has sold some players as well. Also it's fair to say we weren't very good when he arrived so he was starting well behind the eight ball in the league.

Many people have problems with certain aspects of rafa's methodology, but I would think that the majority of fans (I might be wrong here but it's my impression anyway) are still broadly supportive of what he's trying to do. I think the recent drastic reduction in rotation and meddling with the team has won many waverers over to the idea of him being given another season, and even die hard anti rotationists like myself are more than a little curious to see how we'd go in the league under Rafa if we actually gave ourselves a chance.

The unpalettable truth though is that we are sufficiently far behind the top teams in the league to make winning it next season regardless of who is the manager extremely unlikely, and probably bordering on impossible I would think. Winning the league seems to be like climbing Mount Everest in that you need to set up base camp and then plot your way up. Arsenal aren't going to win it this year either, and they may end up finishing closer to us than they are to Man Utd but I still think they've had a taste, launched a challenge and are therefore possibilities for next season.

This for me is the biggest disappointment of this season. Not that we haven't won it, or come cose to winning it, but that we haven't challenged. Even if we challenged up until Christmas and then fell away it'd be something, but we were absolutely never ever in it which is a shame. If as seems likely Rafa does get another go, i think it is absolutely imperative next season thatwe get in amongst it. There must be no more excuses, bad refereeing, injuries, bad luck, missed chances, "aggregate wins" :D or any of that old b0ll0cks. The truth is that if we don't get anywhere near next season, not only is it time to get rid but it would also mean it was a grave mistake to not have got rid this close season.

Thanks for the measured response. Looks like I have found a forum full of fans that do not resort to name calling. Must be the real fans on here  :)  I have been banned from the echo forum a 'few' times for stating some facts.

I am not too optimistic about the next week of fixtures versus Arsenal but feel we may have caught them at the right time. I agree with your point about Rafa allowing the team to actually have a chance when it comes to playing a more settled team. Lets hope he sticks to this formula.
