An insane idea - Another option up front

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby ivor_the_injun » Fri Nov 19, 2004 1:57 am

Something which occurred to me right at the beginning of the season, which I know 99% of this forum would be dead against, is the idea of playing Gerrard as an emergency striker.

Some of his movement in the box and finishing was really impressive before his injury, and it makes me wonder if he could do a job up there for a game or two if the need for it arose.

Note that I'm not suggesting we promote him to be senior striker, just as an option should anything happen to Mellor or Pongolle in the next few weeks.

If something was to happen to Mellor and Pongolle we would be allowed to purchase a striker or sign one on a loan as UEFA let Southampton sign a new goalkeeper on a loan because all of their goalkeepers are injured.

My understanding of that ruling is that it was an exceptional circumstance - I don't think the same applies with outfield players.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the special dispensation only applies to goalkeepers and not outfield players.

Neville Bartos : Nah, forget about it.
Chopper : Because I don't know if you remember, Neville, but I had that bloody shotgun pointed at your head. I reconsidered and dropped it down to your kneecap. Remember?

I really don't think we need to anything drastic and play Gerrard upfront. What is the point of Mellor and Pongolle being her if thats what you wanna do? What kind of message would that send to those two and other yougsters?

He's good enough. But why not give Mellor a go? I think he could get the goals.

I think that all these wild suggestions are just a knee jerk reaction.

We shoulden't mess about with the formation or style of play. We are creating plenty of chances and we have two "younsters", I use the term lossely, who are hungry to play and score.

We should be conentrating on the defence, their communication and understanding has looked suspect lately, espically when playing the offside.

Seriously i think it would knock the confidence out of pongolle and mellor if they got over looked tomorrow, Houllier might have played a midfielder there but not benitez.....also with gerrard and alonso supporting them, chances should be created.

Can I suggest that some of you read all of a post before you have a go at the logic of it (see above)?

Obviously I'm not suggesting that Gerrard is pushed up front ahead of Mellor or Pongolle, but I think he'd be worth trying up there should anything happen to either of them while we have no specialist strikers worth considering to back them up.

Thank you everyone so far has dismissed Mellor give the guy a fair shot. I'm interested to see how he would play on a higher level but everyone already has him written off.
