He's been a top buy by the manager, and an excellent pro. No point in satanding in the way of the inevitable, if it's to be 5 million quid we should take the money I think.

I thinks its a great deal and between Degan and the academy (now Kenny's installed) I would not expect to have a cover problem. Money stays in the bank.

I wish you're right mate.

But yesteryear playing Skrtel at some point wasn't madness, but the consequence of Arbeloa not being available, Degen in unknown status, and Carraguer reportedly reluctant to play there. Haven't we even seen playing Mascherano there?

I hope that kind of situations don't happen again this season, playing Skrtel there is not nice.

I've always thought that Arbeloa was one of Benitez's most under rated buys. He is no world beater but lets not forget that he did an excellent job for us. You certainly can't say that he set the world alight with his play..... but 9 times out of 10 he was steady and I would say comfortably above average.

I also appreciate the straight talk and if we get 4 to 5 million quid for the lad with one year remaining on his contract, then it's been good business all around.

Hope we have someone good in the reserves to step up should Glen get injured though.
Degen is not it. And Skrtel is desperately uncomfortable there. Masch could do the job if push came to shove but what a waste of his talents. Carra can't do the job there anymore.... he would get skinned alive by the quicker wingers.

Ramos is quality and haven't they got miguel torres and salado?

I talked to a couple of Real madrid mates of mines, they are saying arbeloa is bought to play as a left back this season with them.

He often plays left back for Spain doesn't he..

Would he be our best left back?

Many believed it would be a good deal if we sell Arby for 4 or 5 million but can Real get someone with Arby's quality somewhere else paying similar dollar? I don't think so. I understand that Arby only had 1 year of contract left but he is only 26 and he is an international as well. Real had screwed us with the Xabi's approach and we should play more hard ball with them. I know we had Signed Glen but if Rafa believed this year is the year, why not hold onto Arby and even if we lose him for nothing at the end, at least he did his best to have the best possible squad to challenge for the title. What's 4.5 million to us now if we don't add.....

Insua and Aurelio are better than arbeloa

probably, but at pure defending, Arbeloa imo, is better than both of them.

That's probably true, Joe, but playing fullback is never just about pure defending.  A big part of the brief is about getting forward in support of the attack and that's where Arbeloa is weakest.  He's decent, not great, at it as RB but I can't see him being anywhere near effective enough at that part of the game as right-footed LB.

There were still many times last season where Arby was just in lalaland. Insua may be less experienced but I think he would be able to bridge that gap this season. He looks hungry and has always played well for us and given 100%.
My new blog for my upcoming holiday.

Arbeloa goes with my best wishes. He has been a good servant in his time here and, as many say, he has exceeded expectations for what we paid. Glen Johnson offers us a lot more than he does so it's a good time to let him go (at a decent profit).
