One very good reason Rafa will not drop Alonso, he is the best passer in the premiership - better than Gerrard.

I always remember an interview with Danny Murphy after he left when Alonso arrived. He was saying that Carragher had been telling him how amazed they we're at his passing and the fact that they recognised him as the best at the club. This was when Gerrard wasn't being wasted on the wing and was playing week in week out in as a centre midfielder

YOu are kidding right, Alonso was the best player on our side in the Arsenal game. He battled, passed and tackled. Look closely as he ran a lot in that game. But he can't do it alone. He need people to create space for him to pass. But I agree, nice one AB.

Maybe Rafa will finally give Gerrard and Alonso a chance to play in the centre (I wouldn't hold my breath though) and see if they work better than Alonso and Sissoko. Ain't no way in hell is Rafa gonna drop Gerrard or Alonso.

Sell Zenden, buy a better squad player in January who can step in when needed.

Is Alonso needed

He was just about the only positive from yesterday's game if you ask me.  He's had a poor season so far but the last couple of games he's impressed me.

He is the only defensive midfielder we have, neither Gerrard or Sissoko are disciplined enough or positionally good enough to play this way.  He will be crucial for us over the next few seasons.

I agree entirely.

I thought Alonso was by far our best player yesterday. In fact I thought he was outstanding, so I must have been watching a different game to a lot of people.

He never wasted a pass, he was strong in the tackle and overall it was a very passionate and energetic display I thought.

Spot on.  People feel he's off form because he's not playing the Hollywood balls but that's because no one's making the runs for him to pick out.  Like the disciplined player he is, he's not going to play low percentage long balls if no one's going to get on the end of it.  Had we wingers who were doing the business at the moment--and that includes Stevie--no one would question whether Alonso was contributing as he'd be spraying the balls out wide and get the killer moves started.

Even Hamman would be handy right now if you ask me, I'd play him in the middle rather than Zenden. Alonso is out of the question.

Alonso? if we don't need send him back to San Sebastian. *sigh* Being second in the liga and fighting next year to avoid relegation, was a matter of changing Alonso for Arteta. The rest of the squad was more or less the same.

Was that because Alonso? Probably.

Control the tempo of the game, control the passing game. He along with Kuyt and Reina, were the only players that seemed up for it on Sunday.

He's a better tackler than Sissoko is and he has a better footballing brain than Sissoko will ever have. He's also the best passer of the ball in the team.

Sorry mate, but that seems like Match of the Day footybabble.

OK, control the tempo of the game - when did he last do that?
Not many players have ever been able to REALLY do it in recent years. Keane was one of the best...but

"Control the passing game" ??? WTF?

If you look closely when he's on the ball, he is pulling the strings in midfield. He's the one making the passess and trying to find players open in the opposition's box.

Prime example is his pass to Finnan this season against Newcastle at Anfield that led to a goal.

He hasn't been as good as he was last season but without him in our side, we would be very average in midfield.
