then why sign for liverpool ???

Unless he just wanted a year off / higher wage for a year  :no

TBH, i have to question why a 31 year old GK wants to come to us as well.  Especially since we already apparently struggled to agree on personal terms earlier this summer.

He must be just after a decent wage to be back up.

lol, been speaking a couple of Seria A fans and some Roma fans, they think he is sh*te and shocked we are going in for him, even as backup

Wasn't he considered one of the best keepers in serie A once?

If we just want a stand in then I'd bring back Jerzy Dudek.

I hadn't heard he retired, I saw he was leaving RM but didn't hear where we went.  Leeds were linked to him earlier this month.

Not worth shelling out big money on a keeper that going play less than half a dozen games a season. Free transfer just suits us and hes experienced. I would guess weve offered him a decent wage and thats why hes coming over, couple years easy coin and to experience playing footy over here. Plenty of top goalies not starting games and he will be one more but most of them arent that fussed and just seem to crack on with it really.

We've actually offered him wages much lower than what he was making, but he figures if he's gonna be a #2, he should be a #2 at a club like Liverpool.

He's been bought so our young back up keepers can go out on loan and we will have a decent experienced back up keeper if Reina misses any games.

Actually very smart if you ask me.

Comolli delight at Doni deal
15th Jul 2011 - Latest News

Damien Comolli believes the arrival of Alexander Doni will assist in the development of Liverpool's young goalkeepers.

The Reds concluded the signing of the Brazilian from AS Roma on Friday and his acquisition will present an opportunity for the club's fledgling custodians to go out on loan and gain important senior experience, according to Comolli.

The club's Director of Football told Liverpoolfc.tv: "We are delighted to sign Doni. It's a position we felt we had to strengthen because it will allow our young goalkeepers to go on loan and get some experience at some point during the season, which is crucial in their development.

"We are getting a very experienced goalkeeper who is used to handling the pressure of big games and international matches with Brazil. He had a very good end of last season with Roma, so we are very pleased."

By putting pen to paper on his Liverpool contract, Doni became the fifth Brazilian to sign for the club.

Comolli has revealed how he sought something of a character reference from one of our current Samba stars, Lucas Leiva, as the Reds pressed ahead with the deal to sign the 31-year-old.

He said: "I spoke to Lucas about Doni and he was very complimentary about him as a person and as a goalkeeper, so I think it's a great deal for us.

"He is suited to English football. He is big and good in the air and his distribution is quick as well. When you play for Roma for years and years, the pressure at that club in that city is tremendous, so the fact he can handle that shows he can take anything."

Although Pepe Reina is already firmly established as Liverpool's No.1 goalkeeper, Comolli feels Doni will provide top-quality competition for a position between the sticks.

He said: "When you come here and know you will be a number two behind Pepe, what's important for us is the attitude and mentality off the pitch and in the changing room. He's got to be supportive of the number one but also be aggressive enough to push the number one on a daily basis, and I think Doni represents all that.

"When we approached him the first time, obviously he wanted to be a number one somewhere but he said Liverpool Football Club is such a big club that if we wanted him to come as a number two then he would come."

@maguskwt, I don't know about that mate, but I spoke to a couple of Seria A fans and to a friend whose a Roma fan, they don't rate him.

But let's see anyways, welcome to the club Doni

We've barely seen Doni this summer. I can't find anything about him being injured. What's up with that? Has he gone from 2nd to 4th choice, or am I missing something?

Most people would take care of him mob-style.  NESV takes care of him American style.  Get him to work for you for a while then call the authorities and have him hauled away for being an illegal immigrant.
