Liverpool have been hit with a double injury blow with the news that both Xabi Alonso and Daniel Agger are expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks.
Both players returned from international duty in midweek with foot injuries and scans have confirmed they have suffered a stress fracture of their metatarsal.

Club spokesman Ian Cotton told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Neither player will require surgery but we expect them to be out of action for between four and six weeks.

"Xabi Alonso has suffered a stress fracture to the 4th metatarsal in his left foot and Daniel Agger has suffered a stress fracture to the 2nd metatarsal in his right foot."

The news means both players are likely to miss a number of Barclays Premier League and Champions League matches, including fixtures against Birmingham, Wigan, Tottenham, Everton and Marseille.

Oliver Kay: Times
An arduous trip to Portugal may transpire to have carried an even greater cost for Liverpool after it emerged last night that Daniel Agger and Xabi Alonso could face lengthy layoffs with foot injuries. Both players missed their team’s unconvincing 1-1 draw away to FC Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday and, as their return flight touched down on Merseyside yesterday afternoon, they were walking in discomfort.

The two players went immediately to Liverpool’s training ground to have scans amid fears that they had suffered fractures, whether of the dreaded metatarsal or of another bone in their foot. The result of those scans should be known this morning, with Rafael Benítez, the manager, concerned that either player could be out for a number of weeks.

Agger, the Denmark defender, initially injured his foot in the goalless draw with Portsmouth on Saturday and compounded the problem while training at the Estádio do Dragão on Tuesday evening. Alonso, the Spain midfield player, was injured in the same training session and returned to Merseyside with his left foot in a protective cast.

If any squad should have the strength to cope with such setbacks, it is Liverpool’s, particularly in midfield, where BenÍtez has Lucas Leiva, the young Brazilian, to bring into his plans, as well as Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano and Mohamed Sissoko.

But the picture is less rosy in central defence, where the injury to Agger could leave Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia as the only fit senior players. Benítez may be forced to call up one of last season’s FA Youth Cup-winning squad, such as Jack Hobbs, the reserve-team captain, who is likely to make his first-team debut in the Carling Cup third-round tie away to Reading on Tuesday. One other option would be to use John Arne Riise as an emergency centre half.

Then there is the problem caused by Jermaine Pennant’s sending-off against Porto, with the winger suspended for the next Champions League match, at home to Marseilles on October 3. Benítez did not censure Pennant publicly, but he is known to have been dismayed by the player’s recklessness in diving into a late challenge on Fucile, the Porto defender, having been booked for a similar foul on Ricardo Quaresma in the first half.

Pennant suggested that he had been hard done by, a verdict that was not shared by his manager or his teammates. He pointed out that most players are sent off at some point in their careers, “so please give me a little bit of leeway”. It was not a performance that was likely to do him too many favours in the eyes of Benítez or, indeed, Steve McClaren, the England head coach, who regards David Beckham, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Aaron Lennon and David Bentley as stronger candidates to play on the right wing.

Sound like it may be true :(

well found this on the net!!!!!!!!!!!

Agger breaks hand, could be out up to five weeks

Well, our biggest fears have come to fruition with the loss of Danny Agger for up to five weeks with a broken hand. I guess it could have been worse, it could have been an injury to one of his feet or legs. A thorough evaluation will be done tomorrow and an assessment will be made, but our already thin backline just got a little bit thinner, at least for the Portsmouth tie.

Hopefully Steve Finnan will be available on Saturday, but since he didn't play today for Ireland, who knows? Will Hyypia be available? He probably will, but how effective will he be for a thirty-three-year-old who has played as much as he has recently?

I guess that leaves two options, using Xabi Alonso or Javier Mascherano as centre backs or bringing up one of the kids. It's going to be interesting to see what Rafa does, but I have a feeling that he'll try to field the most experience squad possible.

Bad news, lets just hope Hyypia can do a decent job there for a while. His lack of pace was highlighted against Porto when he had 2 yards on the attacker and should have got to the ball first, it was his fault and not Reina's that the penalty was given away.

Not sure what we're gonna do if Carra or Sami get injured as well though, really should have brought in a CB in the summer as it was inevitable this would happen.

I too think it's bad news. However I think Hyypia can accomplish in this weeks IMO.

The reactions to this injury puts in perspective how much has achieved Agger in such a small space of time. Played only a few games 2 years ago, was given the opportunity to become a regular first team player last season, and except for the shaky start he did a notable season. For me he was the player of the year in terms of growth. This season he gets injured and the people is worried.

This player's importance will keep growing as long as he keeps getting experience. I hope he is the Liverpool CB for many years (Sorry Stu, I know you don't like reading this)

John Arne Riise has given Liverpool an injury boost by declaring himself fit for the weekend visit of Birmingham City.
The Norwegian international has missed the last two matches with a groin problem but has been given the all clear to resume full training ahead of Saturday's league clash.

"I'm fit again and raring to go now," Riise told Liverpoolfc.tv. "It was devastating for me to miss the last two games because they were big matches against Portsmouth and Porto.

"I picked up the injury playing for my national team but a scan shown it wasn't a serious problem. I missed four or five days training but I'm a quick healer and thankfully I am fit again now.

"Throughout my time at Liverpool I haven't picked up too many injuries and haven't missed too many games. I'm full of energy now after not playing in the last couple of games and I'm looking forward to the rest of the week's training and the chance to force my way back into the side at the weekend."

While Riise's return will be a welcome boost for manager Rafael Benitez, the Liverpool boss is sweating over the fitness of both Xabi Alonso and Daniel Agger who were sidelined for the clash against Porto with foot injuries

Double metatarsal blow for Liverpool
By Tim Rich
Last Updated: 12:48am BST 20/09/2007

Liverpool were left reeling from a double injury setback last night when it was revealed that midfielder Xabi Alonso and defender Daniel Agger had both fractured metatasals and will be out of action for up to six weeks.

Alonso reported the injury during training yesterday following Liverpol's return from their Champions League clash away to Porto on Tuesday night. Agger had been thought to be struggling with a bruised toe, but that has now been diagnosed as a fracture.

These are the latest big-name players to have sustained a metatarsal injury. Wayne Rooney has only just returned to duty for Manchester United after fracturing his foot and Wigan and England striker Emile Heskey has been sidelined with the same injury. Only yesterday, Everton manager David Moyes questioned whether modern football boots had become too lightweight.

The injuries to the Liverpool pair are the latest headache for manager Rafael Benitez, whose side were far from impressive in drawing 1-1 with Porto, where Jermaine Pennant was sent off.

Things just keep getting worse :(

Well that's that then. We are going to have major problems next month once the fixtures get tougher.

Alonso out for six weeks is a blow, but Agger even more so considering that now Hyypia is the only decent back up.

What a fecking week this has been.

Everything was rosy 3 weeks ago.

We should have buy a new defender when Carra "got" injure. Hypia is too slow (he's awful in last match) and Carra is not "fully" fit or maybe too tired.
