You were obviously watching a different match to me then. From what I saw he was about our best player, penalty aside.

I feel I need to point out that we signed Arbeloa as a Centre back, so we're not exactly down to the bare bones just yet.

He was one of the better performers, but let's not ignore the facts. He was caught by the Porto player and he was left in dust so fast it was like watching a train wreck.

There is not great of a chance that he will be able to perform very well considering his age and the fact that now he will play 2 games a week or so for the following six weeks.

In that play you have to blame the previous work done by Arbeloa and Babel, Hyypia was moved to the left side to make a cover, and they made a 1-2. He could have been faster, but I wouldn't blame him too much.

I agree he was one of the most decent man in the pitch.

I wonder if we'll see three at the back now?

He doesn't possess any physical presence, and therefore imo would lose physical battles in the air and on the ground consistently.

He would have to bulk up a bit to play there.

Oh yes, he WAS definitely done for pace, but I feel you need to look at the mistakes others made in the build up to that incident, is all.

The fact is, if we can avoid the lad getting exposed, he's a f*cking brilliant defender and still for my money the better player.

I'm not suggesting that we should play him there every week, but that, should Hyypia or Carra get injured or suspended, too, it wouldn't necessarily be the end of the World.

But he will be exposed and consistently imo especially if we have Babel or the wing. As his defensive duties have to improve.

Riise also often exposes the near by center-half. The difference is that Agger has the pace to make up for that.

True.

I wonder if Rafa might consider going 3-5-2, with Finnan and Riise as the wingbacks. With Arbeloa alongside Sami, there's a much smaller risk of the big man being caught for pace.

Something like this, perhaps:

                                         Reina

                    JC                   Sami              Arbeloa

Finnan                                                                        Riise
                                      Mascherano

                Gerrard                                      Babel

                          Torres                        Voronin.

Not ideal, by any stretch of the imagination, but a side with defensive ability (and pace), as well as attacking flair.

I'd give it a go in the tougher matches, despite the obvious risk if any cb gets injured.

Lando, that looks interesting. Certainly worth a go. I hate the three at the back (Ruddock, Scales. Dicks) but we got three times the ability in that position and with JAR and Finnan able to slot back when needed and Masch sitting deep, it gives us enough zip up front. I'd like to see them try it.
Knowing Rafa, though, he might stick Reina on the wing: "They won't expect that."  Sometimes when I see our lineup, I think of Rex Kramer in Airplane -
"Should we turn on the landing lights, sir?"
Kramer: "No! That's just what they'll expect us to do."  :p
AND HERE COMES AVI COHEN!! OH I SAY - AT THE SAME END HE'S GOT ONE BACK!!!!!!!!!!

I dont think theres too much of a problem. Midfield we are sorted with the many midfielders we have there and I have no problem with the legend that is Hyypia playing. Ok he doesnt have pace but theres no accounting for experience. We'll be alright ! (Famous last words)
