A chance to reflect - The hideous performance tonight.

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Seeing that match tonight was like watching a replay from last season (and we all know how bad that was) except without Michael Owen.
It will be a relief when the spaniards get going and I understand we're chacing central defenders at A.C. and Bayern Munich, but it has to happen soon. What chance will we have with the appauling squad Houllier has left us with and what hope have we got with only three out and out strikers if we run into a patch like Man Utd (spit) are having at the moment. Graz looked o k but we were shocking. Gerrard must look around and wonder why he stayed. Pongolle, riise and (amazingly) diao looked good, the rest looked like they were trapped in the past. Once again, I feel sad.

Personaly I think we didn't have enough rest for this game. We played a very tough game against City on Sunday. We were down one to null and came back and won. The only day for rest was Monday which probably was training, causing a terrible performance against GAK.

If we played them any other day of this week, we would had played better.:blues:

Tired hey ? Sounds like an Houllier quote !!!!!!  ???

Simply put we were average at best with far too many players taking a stroll. And there Iwas thinking players were trying to impress RB , who am Ikidding !!!

Only Gerrard, Rise and Hyppia came out of that game with any credit. The rest were average at best and Kewell, Carragher  an henchoz were poor for players of their standing......

The only consolation is we made the CL proper and i lok forward to seeinga   lot better than what I saw tonight.

I did not have the chance to watch the game as there was no telecast for the qualifying games here in Malaysia.

Maybe there was complacency as they thought the tie was dead and buried after that away 2-0 win 2 weeks ago.

This is not the kind of attitude to take if we are to face the very best in Europe as they'd murder you even with half a chance. Rafa will correct this, there is still time to go and get new players as the transfer window is still open.

You saw howe Baros,Gerrard,etc.. performed against City, they were all over the place, they worked very hard. I am not trying to make execuses for a bad performance I am just thinking about all the possibilities that could had caused a poor performance.

Rafa is the man when it comes down to making a squad into champions.

Seems strange to me that we have gone from having potentially a title winning side in some people's eyes to a team that needs to buy yet MORE players :O

Bottom line is too many players didn't fancy it tonight and I am sure Benitez will be reminding those players who they are tomorrow in training.

What was particulalrly sad (And I went to the game) was the lack of effort from players who are supposed to be professionals and some of those players included are almost beyond criticism on here and on the terraces.

Sometimes it's all too easy to point the finger at obvious targets like Murphy, Heskey, Traore etc......

Why do we need to buy even more players? Yes we sucked today, but Rafa has the chance of making this team into something good.

Please.....that tie was over before it began. They had to knock three past us without reply........it was never gonna happen. It was an awkward early season tie that we stumbled through.Lets move on.

I agree. We have a match against Bolton to look forward too. Bolton's demise is just a couple days away.

We can't have become a very bad team within a few short days.

Perhaps this was a result of a fair bit of complacency by the lads as they thought that tonight would be a stroll with not too much effort having to be put out as they have won the first leg 2-0. Coming second best in all aspects in a game like this yet still managing to progress is a good wake-up call that there should be no complacency.

I am sure Benithez will have some more words to these bunch. Don't worry too much, you all are passionate fans that is why your reactions are adverse. They all should learn from this and should show more enthusiasm in the next game. Only then, we can then conclude that they don't deserve to be wearing the famous red shirt.

My comment was quoting another post in this thread mate.

I don't advocate going out and buying yet more players ona  whim or as a reaction and thankfully Benitez won't either....

I must say though I'm disappointed that in the light of the poor performance tonight many on here are apportioning blame to Houllier. It shows no class and a lack of respect for a past servant of LFC who although unsuccessful in his quest to bring the title back to Anfield nearly died trying.....

If we must point the finger then at least point it in the right direction ...at the Players !!!!!!!!

You have a point and ariahamad hit the nail on the head. I believe that the players thought that the game would be a piece of cake, overconfidence from the win over City maybe? Just a bad day thats all. There are plenty of good things that will come that will make us all proud. Keep the faith.

I'll keep the faith mate , can't do anything but when you support your team.

The point about players not trying or at best overconfidant wasn't bourne out by the performance....did you actually notice any players playing with over confidence ?

There was £14 million at stake tonight all hingeing on Liverpool qualifying. Thats 1 Cisse or 1 and half Owen's in terms of spending power.

If we play anything like that tonight in the group stages we won;t be earning any more money from the CL.

I'm as ever hopeful we won't repaet that appathetic performance.......

Only Hyppia, Gerrard and Rise came away from the game with any credit ......
