A canundrum - Champions league or a new manager?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Woollyback » Tue Mar 30, 2004 10:26 pm

This topic is more for the "get rid of GH" camp...

Let's say lady luck shines on us for the remainder of the season and we finish 4th - if that happens then in my opinion the board will stick with Houllier for another season and I think GH will choose to stay

If lady luck sides with the Geordies and we finish 5th - no Champions League for us and Houllier's position becomes untenable, so either he resigns or the board push him

Scenario 1 gets us into the CL with GH at the helm. Scenario 2 leaves us out of the CL but with the prospect of a new manager and the prospect of turning round the club's fortunes with a view to getting into CL the following season

So my question is which scenario do you choose boys...?

I would always want Liverpool to finish in the highest position possible. If it means that GH stays then so be it.We know we have to improve our play to warrant any respect in a champions league competition, but I'd rather be in it than the uefa cup.
THERE'S A GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW SHINING AT THE END OF EVERY DAY.
THERE'S A GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW AND TOMORROW IS JUST A DREAM AWAY.

You highlight a dilemna for many fans Woolyback but i dont think its difficult at all. You always want LFC the club to finish as high as possible so 4th it has to be . The fact that many are even thinking of us finishing 5th to accelerate GH's exit is IMO a sad reality of just how petty and personal they have allowed this seaon to become ???  I want GH to leave at the end of the saeson AND finish 4th , maybe I'll get my wish without "hoping" we fail to qualify for the champions League ?

Dalglish, see my post on Scottbot's "what would you take" thread - I agree finishing 4th and GH going would be the ideal scenario and hope like hell that's how it turns out, but I can't see both of those things happening unfortunatly. I really can't decide whether I want 5th & new manager or 4th & GH but my heart says I'm slightly leaning toward 4th and then see what we can do about GH after that

I just think we've perhaps got too much to lose (Owen, £millions, attractiveness to top class players etc) if we're not in the CL

Still, a major f##king dilemma

Gotta be 4th. We need the cash, experience and history of being in the CL. UEFA cup is ok for the likes of Charlton, Villa etc but it is not good enough for us. Also if we do Qualify i cant see the board giving Houllier pots of cash to blow, so leavin a little at least for the incoming guy,coz there is one thing for sure-Houllier will blow it in the CL again next season.

I want Houillier to go but at this stage we certainly need CL football and I wouldn't be much of a fan if I deliberately wanted us to miss out on CL football, regardless of my opinion on Houllier.

Well Im going to be controversial here and say that I would prefer Liverpool finish fifth.Houllier has become a bad influence around Anfield and is destabilizing the club from the top down.Fourth place in the league means nothing to anyone who grew up watching Souness and Dalglish,so coming fifth is no great hardship. Not if it means losing Houllier.Liverpool football club as we know it is dying and we are preparing ourselves for another season of slow death under Houllier. There is no argument in my book.Fourth place, and another year of steady frustration and decline under GH. Or fifth place, and an inspirational new manager who will instill some belief in the players and hope in the supporters.Call me a fickle fan if you want, but because I love the club so much I am prepared to sacrifice short term gain for long term security.Does that make me a bad supporter?

everyone's entitled to their opinion. i'm just of the opinion that even with houllier in charge, we can't be as bad as this season.

If we fail to qualify for the champions league ,Liverpools status as a top side will erode further ,and the decline of our great team will leave us ever closer to mediocrity ,it is essential we finish 4th ,as the uefa cup will fail to inspire or motivate the few class players we currently have at the club, and qualification into the champions league will attract the new players we so desperately need ,and if it means Houllier stays then so be it ,as finishing 5th any new manager would be facing a thankless task and can we afford another 5 year plan, even Martin Oneil would need a transitional period to reshape the team

I think you have to ask yourself this question in answer to this debate. If we are equal on points with newcastle going into the last game against them, could you actaully sit there and go for newcastle? I know i couldn't!

That reminds me of the game against Blackburn in 95 when if they beat us they'd pip Man U to the title. I almost thought I was gonna be rooting for Blackburn as we had nothing to play for but on the day I couldn't - I just had to sit there and laugh my socks off when we beat them but they still won the league cos Man U could only manage a draw with West Ham. It was a stunning free kick from Redknapp that won it if I remember rightly, and Oh what a joy to see King Kenny salute the Anfield crowd having just taken the title away from the scum....

I'm hoping we finish 4th  :D
But I believe we will finish 5th  :(  And 5th could be a blessing in disguise . Recent seasons have seen us knocked out of europe by Marseille,Celtic and Basle (for christ sake !!!)
These are teams we should be easing past with breaking sweat !!! So maybe under GH we aren't good enough for europe ??? He goes , new manager in everybody picks up their game , top three finish next season and a place in the CL final .
But thats just me being petty and personal  :D  :D
