4th place and tonight

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

we've finally beat the cockney jellied eel eaters ....BRILLIANT!
But when our manager and team keep talking about fourth spot like it means anything,it really hacks me off. we're not Charlton or Birmingham we're Liverpool the most sucessfull club in Britain! If we were aiming for fourth place five years ago the fans would have not believed it true.
Get some proper players to bring back the winning belief.
I feel sorry for Houllier but he has to see our team is not World class and never will be untill he makes some world class signings. Look at how much Henry was signed for by Arsenal...
Nuff said!!!

Yeah £10m
Vieira £1m

Thats a skill tho mate. Wenger is the only manager in england to sign WORLD CLASS players on the cheap.

World class players are hard to come by... theres probably only about 6 in the premier league.

Owen, Gerrard, Henry, Vieira, van Nistlerooy and Ferdinand.

Keane and Giggs aren't world class anymore. There are alot of top class players around but truely world class players are hard to find.

I personally like the look of Steed Malbranque, Djiribil Cisse, Freddie Kanoute, Louis Saha, David Dunn, Boumsong, Fabrice Fernandes, David Prutton, Brett Emerton, Scott Parker, Gareth Barry and Simon Davies.

We need a centre half, we need a striker and we need a right sided midfielder.

In GH and the player's defence Waterloo_Red what do you expect them to say at this stage of the season when we are so far off third spot....? "We've cocked up thus far therefore we might aswell not bother for the rest of the season cos 4th place ain't good enough for LFC"....?

If we started the season with a stated aim of 4th place then I'd agree with you 100%, we've simply got to try and pull something from a disastrous campaign, which a CL place would undoubtedly represent, and breed some confidence for the next one.

Stu, Viera actually cost £3.5million from AC Milan in the autumn of 1996, he and Remi Garde were Wenger's first signings: in fact, Wenger was still in Japan at the time and he directed Arsenal to buy these two unknowns.

The funny thing about Viera was that he was a reserve player in Italy (even worse than a reserve player, as the Italians don't have a reserve league). Milan saw him as an expensive French flop, like we see Cheyrou, Diomonde, Traore, Diouff, Diao etc.

Wenger took a chance on him and look what happened!

I like the look of some of your proposals Stu, and I agree that we need a new centre half, a new right sided midfielder, and a new centre forward. I also think we need a new left back, although most people disagree with me on this point. Did people notice how Riise was dropped last night? indeed Riise has been dropped and rotated a lot this season.

Riise? Thats because he's sh##e :)

Well thats harsh but he's no more than a squad player.

Carragher is the answer at left back. He's not naturally left footed, he's also not GREAT going forward but can you name me a better defensive fullback in the world? Not easy when you think about it.

Carragher also brings leadership, pride, passion and a die for the cause attitude that is needed at all great sides and he's a local lad. For me he has to be accomadated somewhere across the backline and he consistently performs well at left back.

Also with Kewell infront of him he doesn't need to provide width. The team has more adaptabilty which is a massive plus point. With Finnan and Kewell providing width and Murphy and Carragher coming inside we still have a solid base throught the centre and we all know that when the defending is needed to be done these two get straight back into position.

A new dawn is indeed upon us........I agree with every word of your last post Stu_the_Red, Carra is precisely the sort of player we need. We know his limitations but he is peerless in what he is good at, he has the right attitude and is not shy in geeing others up too.

I still have reservations about any French League players, most that Arsenal signed were at clubs outside France. (I believe Wiltord and Cygan are two exceptions) As for what we "need" to sign

Goalkeepers - no problems with Dudek and Kirkland both fit

Centre-backs - one more as cover

Full-backs - left-back is still a problem, right-back should be ok when everyone is fit

Centre midfield - Perhaps a creative midfielder, the rest is more than adequate

Wide midfield/wings - I think we need a right midfielder/winger. Has Partridge gone for good/on loan? Unless we play Kewell/Riise wide left then we need someone there

Strikers - Owen and Baros are good enough, I reckon we need a third quality striker for rotation and cover

Most importantly..........no not a new manager (well possibly).........to get rid of all the mediocre players

the most important thing imo is getting in the champions league then we will have more of a chance of attracting some good players. Cisse looks like a done deal for the summer which is great news, and dawson from nottingham forrest sounds ineteresting as a centre back id prefer a right back though. But imo the biggest problem is a right sided midfielder cos diouf just looks lost out there, i think if were gonna chalenge for the league next season he's got to get a right midfielder, but non spring to mind.

Good to see a win against one of the top three clubs, it may not have been pretty but it sure beats the hell out of outplaying them and losing because of one or two defensive lapses.

But winning or doing well against the big teams hasn't been a problem this season, or any other season. The problem is winning games at against the smaller clubs when we are expected to win. The problem is motivation. Looking at the game last night, the players chased and harried and annoyed the living f**k out of anything in blue, the same thing against any of the big teams.

What Liverpool need is the players to show the same motivation week in, week out. If they could smother every team  and stop them from playing then the smaller teams wouldn't have the quality to keep the ball and would make mistakes. I'm not saying defending deep against these teams is the answer, it's not. But giving the 100% every game is, I can handle losing a game where every one gave there best, but I can't handle it when half the team looks disinterested and don't seem to be trying.

As for Emile Heskey, if only the man would paly with the same passion every night. He seemed to be a bit pi**ed off which may have been something to do with it. Maybe some of the dead-weights in the squad would be better served kicking him or dragging out of hm an hour before every game to get him pi**ed cos he is nigh on unstoppable when he plays like he did last night.

A word on Andy Reid, to the best of my knowledge he is left footed and prefers either centre mid or left mid even hough I know he can play anywhere across. I have said this before and will say it again, Richie Partridge needs to be given a chance at least. I believe he is injured at the moment but compared to some of the players who get games for the club how he has never even made an appearance in the Premiership beggars belief, maybe its because he is not an expensive French import who is given every possible chance to prove he was worth the money payed for him. I think Partridges contract is out this summer and 'm afraid he will be lost without ever been given chance.

Last I heard Reading were interested in signing him but he wanted to stay and fight for a place in the team. I would be sad to see him go, too many of our players are on the brink of the team and then get sold. We've sold far too many players who have come up through the ranks, so many that I fear it happening every time a name comes to the fore. I think selling Wright was a mistake, though £3m is pretty good for an unproven defender. Thompson has shown what he could have been doing for us, at times on the brink of an England call-up
