Its a matter of perspective , you either can say we failed to score and dropped 2 pts at home in the CL ....OR we drew with last season's Semi Finalists and a team that won 1-0 at Real Madrid a fornight ago ...

The reality is somewhere inbetween. We played well enough to win comfortably but lacked th kilelr touch in front of goal againsta  highly organised and defensive Spanish team ...

this is also Steve Morgan point

I thought the board brought in Rafa because it was decided that GH wouldnt be able to get us to the next step.
I dont think anyone was expecting instant success, personally im more then happy with our progress so far this year.
Though there is lot of work ahead especially in getting rid of weakness out of squad and bringing in some class at good prices

He's already brought "clas" in Alonso.

He's already bought "well" in Garcia and Josemi.

Contrary to popular belief, the 2 games against the Mancs doesn't constitute our season. Ok we were poor that night but we played worse against Bolton Away.

Benitez has made as good a start as Dalglish, Shankly, Souness and GH . The exception being Fagan and Paisley who were better over the first dozen games.

Regarding the next step , then i to obelieve he can take us there whereas GH couldn't. That next step may take us 3 seasons, are you prepared for that ?

here are some posts from the bbc news site the day he come to liverpool
it is clear that what we where thinking he was going to do and what he has done so far are not the same

Jay Graham
Footballhas gone mad. Liverpool is a Cetic city and its players and management should reflect that. Not sure how deep the loyalty of career managers is. Hope Gerrard will rebuke Cheslea's gold and stay to become a real Liverpool legend. A Celtic city, remember the best teams.

Barry Rose
Lets hope some big name players come to our great club, there is alot of yes men in the squad and we need more depth, we need better players to win trophys, 11 players of the commitment of cara, gerard is what we need, maybe the change will bring that

scotty
It's simple, all he has to do is win us the league and evryone'll be happy! Thank god it's him. It could have been Gerry Francis!

mickey
just get rid of the dead wood! smicer, traore, biscan, diao,el diouf, owen, cheroyu, shall i keep going?stevie hieghway has a bag full of future rooneys and gerrards!

Ronnie
Houllier was responsible for four or five pieces of silver wasn't he? Lots of injuries this past year which didn't help .. the new kid on the block...? EEmmmm? Wait and see attitude here .."seen lots of potential players and or managers with just that...potential?! Jury is still out ..we shall see when the "games begin lads"

Macca
Superb! Now all we need is the likes of Aimar , Vicente and Canizares here aswell! Good Luck Rafael. Bring us some success!!!

Bobby Magee
Yeah, what's all this about Owen approving of Benitez??? 1st thing I'd do is show him who the boss is. If he doesn't like it, I'd show him where the door is. Too many chiefs and not enough indians. He should then get rid of Smicer, Diouf, Biscan and Cheyrou just to start with. He's got a lot of work on his hands... By the way, some of you really need to take some spelling lessons. Are you ALL spanish? ???

amos garwo
Good to have best manager with good dream and team spirit wi talk to owen and gerard to still cause with his middle name is victory. And please mr Benitz you have to put liverpool on top in this seasson.Do not forget about cissi and those new players that you buy will break ,whelther from your former team or not .Please makes it your work to buy new and good players after the nation cup. liverpool fans club in africa (Ghana buduburam) love you .YOu came on time

gavin
i thought they would appoint him as he was the only one in the running as far as I'm concerned - it would of been disastrous to take o'neill - we don't need long ball direct tatics - we need style, commitment and to win game after game

neil b
Fans should get behind the team and the new manager, i mean he has won a leauge with Real Madrid, Barcalona and Deprotivo in it and that takes some doing. I think Mr Benitez will be the guiding light to the top of the Prem.

Crazy Bob
Lets hope he shifts the dead wood. If so, he'll be alright alright.

Ben Lead
Hola Mr Benitez, it is about time the Liverpool board had a born leader. Please if the team play bad give em stick cause there the eleven on the pitch. Its about time we all stood up and be counted as players and fans good luck and if the news about wiltord is true, fantastic bye bye Diouf. Lets see if we can get anything for him

Akmal Hussain
Well I think he is the best man for this job. He must keep Gerrard at Liverpool if we are to move forward and get rid of people like Diouf. I want to see him do, what Arsene did at Arsenal. I think he will need help from the likes of Kenny Dalglish as well.

Alun
Lets hope that he gets rid of the very poor and average players that Houllier bought. I am pleased with the appointment and look forward to watching exciting and attractive football again. Viva benitez.

moysie
houllier looks well after his face lift but why did he name himself benitez

Kopchoirboy
Benitez is right to talk about 'Spirit' and creating a 'Team' that fights for each other. Football is a team game and a side that plays as a unit is far more effective than a group of superstars.

alan
big improvement over houllier, what's the deal with owen?he meets my approval i hope benitez sells owen and buy's some decent players.mr owen you are a flash in the pan its over.maybe a scottish first or second division clud might buy you on load or something.

bob
Good move, maybe some width now. Pass move and lots of goals, good luck.Championship here we come.

John Proffitt
WELCOME TO LIVERPOOL RAFAEL BENETEZ. While you were not my first choice, you have some very big boots to fill in this club, so you will have to work very hard to achieve success. To win the hearts of Merseyside and the loyalist I would suggest you select the best of local talent. For them its not about $$$, its about pride and being the best team. Have a good look around in Liverpool, there's a wealth of talent waiting to be tapped into. If you take that advise, YOU WILL NEVER WALK ALONE.

Marvin
There are no words The best choice the board could have made and i really hopes he brings some of the lads from Valancia with him. Things need to change at our fantastic cluc and i think that time is now.

Len
Probably the best signing to make first.time now for a clear out of the dead wood & bring in some decent players. Good Luck Rafa.

Jonathan
Anyone who watched any of the three games Liverpool have played Valencia over the last two years knows that Valencia have been a class side under Rafa, if Liverpool play anything like that i cant wait! good choice boys on the boared!

muji
i love benitez -finally guys we have a truely great manager!!!! watch the likes of Aimar, vicente arrive at liverpool!! i have waited 14yrs for this!! come on scousers -lets sing to our hearts content!!

brian thomas
A big step up from Houllier.

Alf
Out of all of the big name Managers now in the premiership - Ferguson, Santini, Wenger, Mourinho - Benitez must really want his club to suceed. To leave Valencia for Liverpool is all about the personal challenge. He's the best signing of the summer!

Eric
I don't think so. I prefer a Brazilian manager than Benitez. What liverpool need is criative. Put in the right place and give liberty on forward to M.Owen for he show up his great hability.

steve K
Fantastic News !! - A real coup for us to have appointed someone of Rafael's stature. An event in itself - I now can't wait for the Premiership to start and for Mr. Benitez to clear out those underperforming Reds' stars...wotch out Diouf, Biscan, Smicer, Le Tallec, and maybe others?

Listem , no offence but I go and watch LFC every home game a fair few away and they are already in a  different league to last season in terms of ability, entertainment and invention.

SOME Away games we have failed to impress and I for one refuse to put a "spin" on those games and say we learnt something etc....... but this is a relativly new team playing under a new manager and without Stevie Gerard....

So who would you have kept at the club ? Heskey instead of Cisse ? Murphy instead of Garcia ? Vignal instead of Josemi ? Cheyrou instead of Alonso ?

I think that we have improved dramatically and thats what counts especilly with a new manager and players.

Deportivo gained a hell of a lot of confidence against Madrid just like we did against Fulham and they defended through out the whole game. The fact that we controlled the game  and made good chances is a good sign, but why some can't see that I do not know.

We've scored 13 goals so far in the Premiership, not as bad as you say. Today was a bit unlucky for our players, they had some great chances. These kind of things happen, I am sure we will continue to improve. Bring on Charlton!
