Who was you hero (non Liverpool) growing up?

Who did you pretend to be in the playground?

For me it was Marco Van Basten.

The first tournament I remember was Mexico 86 but at Euro 88 Van Basten done this and I was hooked.

I thought there was no one like him and it was a shame his career was cut short with a bad ankle injury.

No doubt a LEGEND

Some of the best goals you will ever see

Hristo Stoichkov. Class player, used to watch bulgaria play to see him in action, had everything a striker should have, leadership, composure and the most lethal left foot in the game.
Bill Shankly: “I was the best manager in Britain because I was never devious or cheated anyone. I’d break my wife’s legs if I played against her, but I’d never cheat her.”

I always liked Zico and Socrates for Brazil in the '82 and '86 world cups.

Back in the 70's when I was growing up I always looked out for.the Wolves Centre Forward John Richards, a hugely underrated striker, and never got enough England Caps while they were picking the likes of Bob Latchford and Paul Mariner....

Marco van Basten. No one above him during my time. Shame he had so many problems with injuries in the latter days of his career. Loved watching the Milan team back then. And how many bicycle kicks did he score?! Well, more than most others will ever do, that's for sure! A true legend.

Diego, greatest player I've ever seen by a mile, also as a 10 year old I was about the same height as him.

Also - Zico,Baresi,Baggio and Paul McGrath (the "oooh ahhh Paul McGrath" chant was there long before Cantona).

for some reason george berry from wolves stands out in my mind, but i think thats down to his massive afro rather than his play.

for play i wold probably have to say hoddle (even though i remember football pre hoddle), he stands out. i remember being at anfield when we won the title, early 80s i think against spurs, we won 3-1 with 3 second half goals, but what the footage never seems to show is hoddles screamer at the kop end in the first half
