don't know if you would know enough to notice, but those were American footballers names  :D

"Lalas" - I thought that was a pet name for a pie-eating Teletubby pedal-and-crank player on your national team, mate.....

Sorry - couldn't resist  :rasp

What about Pat Bonner? Growing up when Ireland matches were on the one name everyone knew was Paddy Bonner !

Anyway. My countries team.

Ray Clemence
Emlyn Hughes
Stuart Pearce
Bobby Moore
Terry Butcher
Paul Gascoigne
Bobby Charlton
David Platt
John Barnes
Gary Lineker
Michael Owen

Now before you get on my back about Owen. There can be no doubt, on form, he is a goalscorer and I do think he is one of the best at what he does. I still hate the little git for what he has done but you cannot deny he is good at what he does.

I also chose Terry Butcher. He may not be everyones perfect defender but as a kid I watched him in many england matches and the one match that stands out (against Sweden) when he was leaking buckets of blood, he still got on with the job in hand. Can you imagine anyone in todays game doing that , they would pass out with a graze on their knee. Anyway theres my choice.

David Platt is a bit of a shocker

Lineker and Owen in the one team? Would two poachers work?

Don't most older folk put Jimmy Greaves down as the best English poacher?

I'm sure many players from before your own childhood days played with cuts.

Doesn't really seem like enough to get into an all time English team?

Rumour has it that there was football pre 1990 in Ireland.

Sorry to have educate you simple boy.

Ask your dad about Johnny Giles, Liam Brady, Frank Stapleton, and ask your grandad who Johnny Carey was. As for LFC legend Steve Heighway ask the older members of this site whether he was sh!te

Then pretend you know about your own country's football pedigree.

Obviously I can't comment on those players as I am not old enough to have seen them play (sorry about that by the way  )

It's really not an education you reeling off a few names of good players from days gone by, I've obviously heard of them, the fact is that I won't wax lyrical about players I haven't watched play on a regular basis.  But if you're comfortable doing that then good for you.

As for knowing about my country's pedigree, it had none before Jack Charlton, good players or not, the teams were sh.ite.

But cheers for teaching me a lesson anyway 'big' Niall, I'll behave myself in future

To be honest, I wanted to put Fowler, as I think he really would have been the best striker but he wasnt really given a chance for england and I could see where you was going with this thread by picking players that did do well for their country, so I went with Owen. With regards to Jimmy Greaves, I would have only gone on opinion rather than what I had actually seen, the only thing I watched him on was St. and Greavesy !
David Platt, for me at least, was a great midfielder. He got stuck in, did the hard work and scored crucial goals for england. He was also pretty successful in italy where, at the time, he commanded the highest transfer fees paid for a player.

I'm sure many players from before your own childhood days played with cuts.

True enough. Men were proper men then, a broken neck meant sod all. I just generally liked the way Butcher performed. 100% commitment. Wasnt the best at what he did but he was needed when things got tough and got the team going through his leadership.
