Winxp startup - Taskbar

Right. How do you disable certain apps from coming open on startup in the taskbar (bottom right near the clock). Im using WinXP SP3. Reason being i need my comp to start up with NO other cr@p running (for optimised Audio) and after going through all the configurations within Windows/Startup folder etc....i still cannot ditch the 2 or 3 apps that refuse to be disabled automatically. Yeah, i can do it manually...but thats a pain in the neck each time.

The offending programmes are WINAMP and WINAMP remote and Sony Ericsson Manager. Ive been all through the Microsoft help files, and while almost getting to where i want to be...there is no option to disable installed apps like these (or there doesn't seem to be anyway...)

F*cking computers eh! cant live with em, cant do without.

Sabre, saint...get your thinking caps on.  :D

red, if you download CCleaner (from here) it has a utility on it where you can see what starts up with Windows and allows you to stop them doing so.

Press Windows Key (on keyboard) plus "R" and type services.msc into the run command box.

This will open the services menu and allow you to disable certain services from running at startup.

However, be VERY CAREFUL what you disable, only disable programs that you are confident you know and understand, and keep away from Windows essential services.

Stick with CCleaner. It avoids having to mess with the system config directly

Click on run, then type in     msconfig and that gives you all the startup apps.

Personally I would use CC cleaner tools/option .....startup if you have any doubts mate as its simple to use.

Even better is the same type of thing but on spybot search and destroy (if you use it) as that also gives a detailed explanation of what the app does.

I wouldn't fiddle with most of the services.

As many have commented, CCleaner is the best option and if you need help Red37 you know where I am.

If you need to do that without any external program -- for instance if you go to your cousin's house and she has no internet,

Press windows-r and then write

msconfig

A multi-tabbed window will appear, and in the "Start up" tab you can select the apps that you want to be loaded at the beginning.

There, you can disable without  problems the likes of "nero check", "Adobe update", and actually most of the apps appearing there and that slows down the start up.

Try aswell "Advanced Windows Care" in google, it's a free program by iolo. It allows you to do the same thing, plus it gives you a quick tip about what apps are optional and what are necessary. It also removes junk.

PM if necessary.

Thanks lads.

Done like you said and used CCleaner (2.13) didn't have a clue like...but, hey.

This is what i did:

1. Analyzed
2. Ran cleaner (regardless of the info displayed!) there were a LOT of files anyway.
3. in tools i disabled the apps i wanted rid of
and exited the program.

Minor panic when i couldn't retrieve me logins for this and one or two other sites...although a bit of digging has resolved that issue (obviously).  :D

In any case thanks for your help.

By the way Red, what browser are you using?  Firefox 3 has a new feature called the Smart Bar/ Awesome bar.  Even when you clear your history, this thing still stays there showing your favourite websites that you have visited the most.

Naturally, I was horrified to see this invasion of privacy but there is a way or two around this if anyone wants to get shut of this.  Let me know.  This is something that Mozilla have made a mistake on with the new browser if you ask me.  But Firefox is a belter and I won't use anything else.  I downloaded Google Chrome and Opera as an alternative to IE7 but Firefox is the one for me.  With all the add-ons that can come with it and the Greasemonkey scripts you can add, it's the only browser to use.

My opinion anyway...  :)
