i'm a keen skiier and will be following the olympics, but its started very badly...

The death of a luge competitor who left the track at high speed has cast a shadow over the Winter Olympics in Canada ahead of the opening ceremony.

Georgian Nodar Kumaritashvili's sled flipped and he smashed into a steel pole at the Whistler Sliding Centre, killing the 21-year-old.

It happened hours before the ceremony to open the Vancouver Games.

Kumaritashvili's sled struck the inside of the track's last turn during his sixth and final training run, sending his body into the air and over a concrete wall.

His sled remained on the track, and the visor from his helmet appeared to continue down the ice.Medical staff at the track and doctors at a local hospital tried to resuscitate

I used to hate the short track speed skating but watching them all crash into each other is actually quite good fun, fecking stupid sport though, what the hell was wrong with regular speed skating?

The Canadian men's hockey team may not win an Olympic medal, but it's already the ratings champion of the Vancouver Games.

The Canada-U. S. hockey game drew an astounding 10.6 million viewers Sunday night, CTV says -- making it the most-watched sports program in recorded Canadian television history.

Viewership of the game -- which ended with the Americans winning 5-3, a victory one U.S. newspaper called the "minor miracle on ice" -- peaked at 13 million in Canada and was watched at some point by two out of every three Canadians.
To put the hockey game's viewership in perspective, the ratings are 59% higher than the Canadian broadcast of the Super Bowl.

(don't know why they would compare it to the Super Bowl)

Maybe the superbowl achieved the second highest TV sports ratings in Canada?  ???

Woohoo, Canada wins men's hockey gold and breaks the record for most golds by a (winter) host nation! :buttrock  To put it in perspective, imagine England winning the World Cup on home soil.  Great stuff. :blues:
