It's in the rules for everyone. Not just Roberts.
It's absolutely pointless. If an old thread is dug up for the benefit of discussion or any related purpose, then fine, bump it.
But just to post

I've done it myself. I'm guilty of it, but the last two times I have done it was to bump the "I am the music man" thread by taff which made me piss myself laughing, and a thread ages ago from OldRedEyes, a member who doesn't post here anymore, but every post he did make was worth reading and I just wanted to remind people of that.
Not threads with stupid replies from Cheesecakery and some tosser called Alex from Manchester about a pre-season match nearly three years ago. It's considered spamming.
I tend to use the New Posts link rather than a specific forum link like many others I'm sure on here, and we'd rather not see it populated by three year old threads.
If you do want to see three year old threads on the New Posts page, let me know why below, if you can think of any real reasons. I've explained my reasons above.
If you can't explain, it's simple, don't do it.
