Sky advertised it as the "greatest show on earth". Yeah right. It would be half watchable if the game wasn't stopped every 5-6 seconds and there wasn't constant nike and reebok ads in the middle of the game.

Absolute dross. The rugby on saturday was what you call a great spectacle.

after creating the Ouse on a previous venture, i would like to say i love gridiron, coz i like the regular breaks. it gives me the needed time to urinate alot after heavy drinking sessions, wooohooo  :D

Scottbot wrote:Have to disagree folks - Gridiron is a cracking game but it takes a bit of getting used to. As woof said it is very tactical, in fact it is THE most tactical sport on the planet, it takes a while to get the hang of the all the rules and if you haven't ever watched it before you are much better off watching a highlights program and not a live Superbowl with advert breaks every 2 minutes. I used to play the game over here for 6/7 years and it really is great fun.

The game yesterday took something like 3 hours and 45 minutes to play... to play a game that is only an hour long. It is so boring I can't understand how anyone can sit through timeout after timeout, video review after video review and advert after advert. And to call it football, American or otherwise is just plain ridiculous. They play the ball with the foot maybe 15-20 times a game... and that's a job reserved for the kickers and punters. Horrible.

Have to admit it takes a long time to play 60minutes of NFL football but then our football would take a fair while if the clock was stopped every time the ball went out of play. Its called American Football because the game was originally based on Rugby which was known as Rugby Football, hence the name football. I can understand why a lot of footie fans don't like the sport coz they are so different ie. breaks in between plays, lots of officials, more infringments and many rules. But then again, cricket is similar in some ways ie. there is a break in play after each delivery and it is a stop startgame that takes a long time. Crazy to think 2 teams can play a game for 5 days and it still finish a draw!

It's really a game of SET plays think of it as chess with real people . :D

The thing is woof I thought I'd give it a crack to see what all the fuss is about. I was also hoping for another "Janet Jackson" type incident.

The game was barely seven seconds in when a break for adverts suddenly interrupted the play, as video replays, refs and players argued whether some bloke's knee had touched the ground or not.

Confused and a little bored I watched on, only to view the worst 'quarter' of any sports event of all time.

There is absolutely no fluidity.

When the ball is in the air I couldn't see it.

You can't identitfy indvidual players.

Nothing seems to happen.

All the coaches and subsitutes were scattered around the outer lines of the pitch making it impossible to see who the hell was where.

By now angry, I switched over to casually be entertained by an average Ben Stiller film on BBC1.

When I turned back it was 7-7.

Gutted I had missed the 'action', I had to make do with the lovely Gaby's half time chat.

The wife's snoring was quickly turning from endearing to annoying, as I watched on.

Suddenly, seemingly from nowhere I was lauched straight into a rock concert, complete with stage, crowd and everything.

By now uttery baffled, I switched off and tried to get to sleep.

By 25mins later I swtiched on again, deciding perhaps I hadn't given it a fair crack. Well I had.

My overall assessment.

Amercian Football = Rubbish.

im definently with you on this one mick, its already in my bad books cos of its name alone .... American Football  :D

What was it Shanks said ?
"If Everton were playing at the bottom of my garden I'd get up and close the curtains " ?
:D
Never mind Dom , your lot have done well to go from almost relegated to almost qualified for europe (credit where credit is due) , but looking at your run in you'll be lucky to make it into the top 6. :D

Gotta say ,selling Rooney was a stroke of genius , (seriously) your lads have played their best for many a season.

Ok. Half the point of the superbowl is the atmosphere that it creates for the fans. I attended my first superbowl party yesterday and it was brilliant. It was a celibration on the same scale as new years, the ads over here are all new and cost over $1,000,000 per ten seconds so he are fantastic. There are competitions, give aways, cheap drinks, great foods and people who actually like the game are cheering and shouting and it's like the F A cup but on a much larger scale. Watching the game in England doesn't compare (trust me, I've been doing it for years) and as someone who used to play American Football, and IS a fan, it was a treat to witness.

So before you slag off the game because you don't understand the traditions that go with it like the adverts, the half-time show and all the rest, I'd just like to say that although I don't undertand allgebra, that doesn't mean I hate it. If you're not a fan of this game then don't watch it, because you won't get it. If you can appreciate it, you'll love it.

American football is more like a game of chess than a game of regular football. Each move, each play, each little step is a highly planned, precise procedure. It's similarities to rugby end with the shape of the ball and it is also incredibly dangerous so before anyone makes the remark about the players being chickens because of the armour and helmets, let me just say that I had my leg broken two years ago because it was facing the wrong way by about ten degrees, I've suffered concussion a number of time and suffered a lot but it is still s brilliant game to play.

Do you think an American or anyone else who doesn't enjoy football would enjoy watching the FA cup? Of course not. I love soccer, rugby, aussie rules and American football, I don't like tennis, but I don't slag it off because I don't understand it. I know this anti-america thing is very trendy at the mo, but the American government and foreign policy does not accuratly represent America, it's people and it's traditions. In fact, they're just like us! Shock horror!
