Avast is free as well link but I have never tried it so not sure how good it is.

Thanks Saint. Your a star. Programme installed and running a scan as we speak.
The only problem I have now is Windows defender keeps telling that my firewall is off. Do I switch it on or does AVG have one??

Avg is just anti-virus Kazza

Zone alarm is the best free firewall I know. (better than most of the ones you pay for too. ) LINK

The problem is his computer is switching on and off all the time, its not even staying on long enough for him to log into his account, he is running xp but not sure what version. his Dad rebooted last week but the problem still persists, a reboot was the first thing i was going to suggest untill he told me this, could it be a boot virus or is it likely to be hardware any help suggestions would be appreciated as he is dropping the pc off next week for me to take a look at.

if any of you need more info ill supply it once i have it.

thanks in advance JD

I hate these problems we had similar ones with our other pc we got. First of all, if possible, try the hard drive in another pc to ensure that it is not the hard drive itself at fault.

If not open up the cover on your tower, power off of course and makes sure everything is cleaned, the fans, motherboard make sure there is no dust or whatever clogging anything up that is causing the pc to overheat. A vaccum with a brush on the pipe should be ok to clean it.

If there is still no joy pull out all the cards, one at a time ensure they are clean give them a wipe with a clean cloth then reinsert them. Ensure that every lead is connected properly also to things like the motherboard, cd drive, floppy disk whatever.

If there is still no joy then the chances are age has caught up with it. Either replace the memory, graphics card, sound card or just buy a new pc !

I would try to boot the computer in safe mode, then try a system restore before looking at hardware problems. Then if that didn't fix it I would PM Sabre mate.

When it keeps rebooting, from experience its caused from overheating. I unscrewed the fans and gave them a good scraping, the filth that built up was gross ! when I reattached them the pc sounded loud but it stopped the rebooting and the overheating.

Oh, I'll happily attend any request, but I really think you're the best option to PM, you are far better explaining than me mate  :D

Just a comment on AVG. My opinion about it is good, because it's free. It's a decent free option than can compete with many commercial brands. I do experience problems with Outlook Express, it generates blocks for some reason quite often (In one job I used AVG because I don't like piracy at work). Also it's a good idea to deactivate the daily full scan. IMHO, with the www.windowsupdate.com updates, a bit of common sense, and a full scan every month or so, it's more than enough.

For instance, I don't use any other firewall other than the windows one. Zonealarm, and many others are a nuisance everytime you need a connection. They're always reporting attacks, that were crushed against your system anyway, too much of overprotection that slows down, and it's not necessary IMHO. Often, it's more than enough to just open the ports you're gonna use in the router. I'm not keen on having too much resident programs browsing all your files and connections you open, it's slow.

Hi peeps a friend of mine has been in touch with a computer problem, would be grateful if any of you can pass on any idea`s or maybe a link or two.

Two things can explain this.

a) The fan of the cpu got too much powder and shít, and doesn't cool enough. When you start the computer it's 45 degrees, and as soon as you open some program, it gets too hot and reboot.

Normally, if this is the case, it stays longer on if you had the computer off for quite a while before. If that's the case, open it and with a screwdriver remove the most solid shít. Use aswell lubricant oil (in small quantities), like the one you use in bycicle chains. Or simple replace with another fan. No need to be a computer guru, just follow some simple instructions about how to place a new cooler.

b) An old virus, made a countdown before rebooting if you hadn't the service pack 1 (updates) installed. If he sees a countdown, I'll give you specific instructions for that. If not, let's go to c)

c) The best way to know if you have a hardware problem without being a hardware guru is to download Knoppix. A program (OS), that installs in memory and you'll see windows, etc. You download knopix (it's free), and you burn it in a CD. If knopix loads your system nice, it means your system is nice. If you have memory or motherboard problems, then you'll also have it under knopix. If that's the case you have to repair something, probably memory.

If Knopix runs well, then it means your windows is fúcked. Try a restore of windows, and this is important, install the updates.

If you didn't understand my broken Spanish, feel free to ask.
