well there has been another shooting in an american school/college with 33 deaths so far. two students were shot and killed in one building then another 31 killed later in another building, as yet the two shootings have not been linked to each other.

but i do think its about time america had a reality check on certain issues, i was watching CNN about the shooting and they had a an american woman psycologist, the question from Larry King was about guns, her response was that this can happen anywhere in the world, she goes on to say how her son went to oxford uni in england and three times in three years there was someone stabbed. now personally if i was the interviewer i would have asked what a stabbing has to do with someone on a gun spree killing innocents. of course Larry missed this or ignored it.

I dont think banning guns will do anything anyway to be honest, if you want a gun because you are a criminal then making it illegal wont make you suddenly say "oh its illegal to have a gun, i better not commit that crime, I will do my armed robbery with a hose pipe".

I dont know the solution to be fair, i suppose nobody does, how can you say someone will do such a think before it happens.

i am sure more news will come out about the shooter, apparently an asian youth, but its not yet known if he was a student there

Well as long as its happening in the good old US of A I dont really care, afterall their stupid laws allow them to buy guns over a shop counter do they not. Virginia Tech is a big rival of our school.  I had a lot of friends that went their around 20 or so and all of the ones I have been able to contact are safe.  Just like suicide bombers, If one man is willing to lay down his life in order to take as many others there isn't much that can be done to stop it once the person has made up their mind.  It seems disgusting to try and make it a political issue when there are still people's lives on the line in the hospital.

very true joe, very much like the suicide bombers in iraq at the moment, they can't be stopped. however in a supposedly more civilised society like the USA you would expect some more measures to be taken in relation to guns, however like you say if you are intent on killing then you will get hold of one anyway.

like i say in my post, i dont know the solution mate, how can you tell who is likely to do such a thing? is it the bullied geek or is it the misserable emo?

very difficult times, just like the amish school mate, its the kids who suffer and the families left behind suffer, schools are a soft target i suppose, it should be the last place where you need to have your wits about you for such a thing.

I am sure this is going to increase security around college campuses which are now mostly focused on rape and robbery prevention.  Will probably see security guards in every major classroom, and most high rise dorms at my school require a swipe card to get into the building and a second swipe to enter the hallway from the stairs.  I am guessing there will probably be new rules regarding using the swipe card to get into classrooms as well

he is supposed to have killed her and her new boyfriend in the first building before continuing the rampage in the second building.

it seems it started as a domestic of sorts before he totally flipped.

America will never do what is necessary to avoid these kinds of incidents, so they simply have to accept that they will happen ever so often.

but that way you can only get into the classes that you are signed up for and get into the dorm hallway that you live in. if you wanted to visit your mates they would have to let you in.  In yesterdays shooting, the killer was able to get into a couple of class rooms (I think, info is still a little sketchy and unclear)
Trying to make it harder to get guns in our country is one of the harderst things to do. the NRA have so much lobbying power and the 2nd amendment of the consitution backing them up, so lots of money and time usually goes wasted, and its not a garuntee to fix the problem because the blackmarket for guns in the US will grow becuase the demand for guns will still be there and that will probably cause more problems.

Trying to identify people who are suffering mental problems and or depressions or show any signs that someone might commit something so terrible is so hard, and I am sure there are hundreds who show similar signs but never act on it.

There is also going to be a HUGE reaction to what caused this, and there will be a link with video games and violence in TV and movies, and I am really worried that censorship will increase a lot more, and that is a shame for the actions of one could ruin the fun for millions

It was legal to buy guns in the UK (with a license) but after the Dunblane Massacre the government changed the law introducing a ban on all cartridge ammunition handguns with the exception of .22 calibre single-shot weapons. In 1997 this was superseded by the Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997, banning the remaining .22 cartridge handguns.

Obviously this would be hard to achieve in the USA but they definitely have scope to restrict what is legal to own, etc.

However, Americans should ask themselves why this rarely happens in other countries but happens so often in theirs. Something is f*cked up in their country and if they don't admit this they won't fix it.
