Bought me bird a Dell Inspiron little laptop for Crimbo, and trying to set it up to work on the network at home.

Everytime I try it seems to have a problem.

Tells me there is limited or no connectivity - then seems to have a problem with the IP address (ie acquiring it).

Can anyone hlep ?

If you want to find out your IP address go to RUN and type CMD. Then type IPCONFIG. Your IP address, gateway ect...should be displayed.

So you are trying to set up your wireless internet is that right?

I have two other laptops that I use on the woreless network as well.

I'm supposed to be cooking right now ans I have few mins

I'll come back later but tell me more

I assume that

1)you have a working wireless network
2) you detect your network from your dell
3) you reach to enter the password of your wireless network

and then you get that message no?

go to the command line (windows+r and then type cmd)

then type

ipconfig /release

then

ipconfig /renew

then copy me back what you can see there, it can be several things.

You have vista, no?

If you have any problems setting up your network TRY NETWORK MAGIC Leonits free and you also get 10 days or so with the full program, which enables you to see clearly where any problems are. Sort out your problems then just use the free version or uninstall it completely.

I had a problem with a printer not wanting to "join" my network, fixed it in a couple of mins with Net magic.

Good program, not had a real problem with my network since mate.

It's your bluetooth on the laptop. Make sure that it's on. A mate of mine had the exact same problem. There's a combo of keys to press that turns it on, but I'm not sure what it is. It's no good trying to use the ipconfig in the cmd box because it won't be able to detect the IP in the first place if it's not finding your router. This is your main problem, I'm sure of it. Problems like that are fairly daft and simple ones with simple solutions, but a pain in the balls none the less.

Wi-Fi, Blutooth, whatever your wireless router uses to connect to your laptop. If it's disabled on the laptop, it won't connect. Simple. Check the laptop to see if it's on. There should be a key that just turns it on and off, but I think you have to hold one of the "F" keys and press something else to enable it. Google about to see what it is for your laptop.

Its got nothing to do with Bluetooth.

Also, if your new laptop hadn't its wireless switched on it wouldn't even find the network.

How far away from the wireless router are you? I assume you have a good signal throughout the house.

Go into control panel and find out what wireless card you have and post it on here so we can have a better looksie.

Have you got the radio of the laptop on? Sometimes it's a switch, which a led that indicates you it is on. Sometimes it is a key combination, and the correct one is this key that has some sort of antena printed on the key.

I wanted to do a ipconfig to know if there was some sort of communication, or to know whether the ip you got is wrong, but if media is disconnected it means it doesn't even fail to do it. Make sure the radio is on, in the mean time I'll look  couple of geek forums to know if your model has some "strange poltergeist".

I'll come back when my gf allows me to. :D
