I dont think I can send stuff from my laptop to my desktop - I usually just e-mail myself stuff and look at it on the other computer through a gmail account.

If its already in there obviously its not that lol.

How do I finf the MAC address of my new laptop ?

What S@int says is true sometimes. For instance in my job I have reservations for each mac address (every card has one), and if you don't make the reservation, it won't grant the IP. Normally that's something you might want to set if you make a Domain or a workgroup.

However, you didn't have to do any of that with your previous computers no? If you hadn't to do that with your other computers at home, I reckon it shouldn't be necessary this time. But try it, it won't make any harm that you learn to fiddle with the router.

The best candidate so far is that the network card is faulty in my humble opinion.

You can check the state of the devices, with Windows+R and then, instead of cmd, type devmgmt.msc (device management)

Then go to the network cards in that tree, and check whether there's some sort of ! icon. Not meaning the one that appears in the bottom right corner, but in this tree.

No mate thats a LAN, BUT it will sort connection problems out. I think your problem might be you are not being allocated a correct address, but you would need to know whether you have a static or a dynamic one. You could try allocating your own?

It starts to get too complex for me at that stage.

I would try the app ..... you have nothing to lose. I am out of my depth once its not a simple problem mate.  Sorry. Better I admit defeat than fk your comp up.

Leon, try typing ipconfig /all in a COMMAND PROMPT WINDOW. See if the Autoconfiguration IP address is a "169.254"( should look something like this - Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.94.38 )
if it is then try this :-

The "Limited or No Connectivity" indication is because the network adapter has failed to get its IP address by DHCP from the router and Windows has defaulted to allocating a "169.254" IP address.

Try repairing the TCP/IP stack and Winsock. Open a Command Prompt window ("Start > Run", type cmd and click OK).

To repair the TCP/IP stack, at the prompt, type...

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

...and press Enter

(note the spaces in the command line). The original prompt will reappear.

To reset Winsock entries, at the prompt, type...

netsh winsock reset catalog

...and press Enter

Exit the Command Prompt window and reboot the PC.

Done that, there is not one there mate. (an exclamation !! mark that is)
