Anyone see any of the series on medieval Britain on one of the bbc channels?
Interesting stuff, they've great records from the 13th century and so can reflect on an average persons life, same issues as today, paying rent, taxes, workers rights, start of democracy etc.
They drank ale as their main drink - not water. it was about 2% alcohol but that is what the children drank too. Loads of pubs too.
apparantly the plague was good in the long run for the peasants (most people) as it swung demand and supply of labour in their favour (half the country had just died) and led to more rights for average people.
