seeing as many of you don't actually live in the coolest city in europe (   :;):  ) i thought i might try and share some of the experience of life here in the BCN. to bring you up to date i have already mentioned (somewhere in the real world) that the local film rental shop is called 'Video Bum Stop' and that there is a chocolate museum round the corner.

todays new nugget is this:
the local english pub where i watch the footie with me mates is called the black horse. it has its own morris dancing troop.

there is a square in barcelona called 'plaza george orwell' or commonly known as plaza trippy cos its full of hippies and winos. it was the first place in barcelona to have surveillance cameras installed.

is that its proper name andy or is it a nickname revolving around the whole 1984 - big brother is watching you- thing?
i read a book about orwell and he fought for the republicans in the spanish civil war, getting shot in the neck in fact.
it would be a nice gesture if the city of barcelona had named a square in honour of eric blair (his real name)

yckatbjywtbiastkamb, mate. it really is named 'plaza george orwell' in honour of the man himself and his civil wartime exploits. don't you just love the way he describes being shot in the neck as 'rather interesting'... or something like that?

thanks andy, its a nice way to honour the great man, who was educated at eton but turned his back on priviledge to live with the down and outs of the world.
its almost poetic that the place is frequented by hippies and wino`s - i dont think he`d want it any other way.

as spring is just arriving and the mercury (and not just the mercury) is rising, the council are beginning to get the beach sorted. it always nearly disappears in the winter.

barcelona officially has 6 beaches: san sebastia, barceloneta, nova icaria, bogatell mar bella and nova mar bella.
