One of the recurring theories that are explained to combat trolls or Wind up merchants is the ignore them tactic. We all tend to agree that, and we all try to ignore them. But at the end of the day, if you are discussing and enjoying a debate, and suddenly you see a post with a long quote of 100 lines, and just one liner comment, and this line is insulting, the reading experience is worse.
Besides, this attitudes of ignoring will be assumed by many posters, but probably won't be assumed by young-decent posters that have not very much experience on forums, and will respond to the troll anyway.
I think that mods should have more rights, because it's really-really a dirty job being mod, and they should have better tools to work. I think that they also should have the right to make a post dissapear or deleted. Deleting rather than locking is a good option for some threads, because a guy like mudface would find very discouraging to spend half an hour trying to be smart, only to see that his thread has been deleted. The answers to the stupid thread of mudface should also be deleted, thus discouraging the answering of this kind of threads. If an insulting post is found in the midst of a decent thread, just delete that post.
I think that being mod is difficult, so good luck to the one that will replace JBG!
